What are the nicest towns AROUND Rome - say 30 mins to an hour away by train (and on a station)

Stayed just outside Sorrento last year which was perfect for visiting Naples, Pompeii etc, and want to do the same this year but near Rome.

What are the nicest areas to look for? Any recommendations? TIA.

The roman ruins at Ostia are supposed to be fantastic and IIRC it is do-able by train

Blandmum · 12/04/2008 17:14

tourist details and how to get there etc

Thank you! That definitely looks well worth a visit - the dcs loved Pompeii and it looks right up their street.

I haven't put my op very clearly I don't think though - I'm not sure where to base myself. Googling "hotel/villas near Rome" tends only to bring up IN Rome - I want a nice town further out than a suburb to base ourselves in - and very, very definitely on a train line, no intention of driving in Rome!

Oh no, tha driving in rome is ver....how to put this tactfully, Idiosyncratic!

Will have a shufti for you in my copy of the rough guid.

back in a tick

Sadly the guide doesn't list any accomadation outside of Rome, only inside.

brownhills

Thanks anyway.

Am having marginally more luck with googling 'outside Rome'.

Could you please pass on any good sites, I'm hoping to do exactly the same thing in June!

Will do UFM. Will keep bumping too!

Nothing much came of yesterday's google, other than Todi (where I have stayed about 20 years ago) is looking the most likely area. Bit further out than I planned though, and haven't found a hotel/villa yet - the dcs are really good about sightseeing etc but do like a pool as quid pro quo.

Have not been but Anzio (on coast) is not far by direct train plus a bit of WWII history.

Used to live in Rome - long time ago now, and I don't think the immediate surrounding area is particularly exciting. Bit like staying in Croydon or Barnet rather than central London IYSWIM.

Understand what you're after though - I loved Sorrento too but that's a proper little resort with it's own life rather than just a satellite town. Maybe try the hill towns, think they're called the Castelli Romani - places like Frascati and Castel Gandolfo. The Pope's summer place is in Castel Gandolfo so it must be OK!

Am v. jealous. Would love to go back to Rome. Fab food. And wine. And people. And clothes. And scooters. And weather. Sigh. I'll shut up now.

Thanks MM.

Bump for any more?
