Can anyone recommend a car hire company in france? Specifically Toulouse (thinking there may be independent businesses?)

The quotes I've seen have HUGE deposits over £1000 for tiny little cars so hoping there may be some better value offers I've missed.

Just about all cars will have huge deposits. It's how they get you to pay 10/20+ euro a day for full insurance.

Alternative is that you buy excess insurance in the UK for about £10-20 pw and take a credit card (if you're one of those people who don't have a credit card because 'you don't need one' this is why you do need one ) for them to reserve the deposit on and then release when you take the car back.

Take pictures of all sides of the car when you collect and return it and in the unlikely event that they charge you anything, you have your excess insurance, credit card section 75 protection and evidence of the state of the car on collection and return which means the chance of losing money is almost nil.

I've never hired a car in France so can't recommend any companies. All I know is steer clear from Goldcar and Record if they're an option.

Try looking at Zest - a UK rental car broker, that includes excess insurance in their rates.

A quick look at rental cars in Toulouse through them gives some cars with lower deposits (a block on your card) in the order of €500 - €800.

If you're flying, you can normally get pretty good deals if you book flights and car combined.
