Solo holiday suggestions abroad

Would like some sunshine and thinking of heading abroad. On my lonesome. All friends have young children so no one to go with.
Not sure where to even begin looking so calling on mumsnetters to help me.
Has anyone done a trip before themselves? I would like somewhere hot. But somewhere safe and quiet.

I'd like some suggestions too.

Would you consider a retreat or activity holiday - there are quite a lot of holidays based around yoga, Pilates, painting, cooking etc which are popular with women travelling alone but who want to be sociable. Often in June or September outside school holidays.

If you want to stay solo, I would pick Italy - combine a city break with lots of cultural options with a stay on the coast or perhaps the Lakes. Venice and Lake Garda perhaps.

What do you like doing?

I had a nice city break by myself in Avignon in April.

Lake Bohinj in Slovenia is beautiful. I planned on walking but mainly lazed by the lake and swam.

I've been on some great solo holidays, always did a group activity style holiday, some have solo holiday options too so you don't end up with all other couples.

Did walking holidays with Exodus and Yoga with Yoga on a Shoestring and a scuba diving holiday with Go Learn To.

Always thought Unicorn Trails looked interesting too, horse riding holidays....

Depends on what you like and feel like doing!

Fly and flop - Greek Islands, research them, and choose one or maybe two that are close together and quiet enough for you.

Moving around - Italy or Spain. Fly to Venice, go to Padua and Bologna. Stay in Padua short trip on train to Venice and so much cheaper than Venice itself, train also to Bologna - great place, energetic vibe and such lovely food. Not really "quiet" but very safe in Padua.

Spain - Seville, Cordoba, Granada.

I haven't done the Greek island hop yet but it's on the list. I have done the Italy and Spain trips on my own and it was very easy to get around. If you decide on this, bring minimal luggage in a backpack, you don't need much and it makes getting on and off trains so easy when travelling solo.

Best of luck.

Join the fb group Solos in the Sun. People post up where they are going or where they are now. Feeling lonely on holiday just post and 300 people send you a cheery message to keep your spirits up. Great for ideas and inspiration.

New York City certainly isn't quiet, but I'll mention that it's a place where people are very matter-of fact about solo women at a restaurant or theater.

What do you like doing? What is your level of comfort with adventure? Do you prefer relaxing, cities or the outdoors? Do you want to 'travel' or 'have a holiday'?

Croatia - especially if you drive
