Norwegian Fjords for largely antisocial couple....

I'm struggling to decide on a fjords cruise for next spring for me and DH.

I've done P&O with my adult children and loved it, but I'm worried about the giant ships concerns in the fjords!

I want to:

  1. sail from southampton
  2. minimise sea turbulance!
  3. talk to as few people as possible
  4. have our own table (don't mind formal or informal)
  5. spent a lot of time sitting on my balcony or up top just watching things go by (limited mobility)

Any suggestions, seasoned cruisers?

I recently did the P&O
Fjord cruise.
It had free dining so you went for dinner as and when you chose to whichever restaurant you chose.
Norway was beautiful but I wasn't overly keen on the ship ( Iona).
It was big and immaculately clean but the service in the bars was terrible, so slow!
We were on deck 18 but felt very little movement.
It is probably the best way to see the fjords though.

Did the fjords in April on Britannia, also freedom dining. If you don't mind waiting you can get a table for 2, though they are often close to other couples. We didn't have any rough weather at all.

At work just now, but just wanted to say that we (husband, 2 daughters and I ) are on a Norwegian Fjord cruise on Friday from Southampton. Don't have the details to hand but I will let you know how it goes when we get back!! 😀

Thank you - I would lean towards the P&O ships I think because they are so large you can be more anonymous... but concerned that maybe that takes away from the things you can visit on the fjords perhaps?

Hi you won't miss much as the ship docks in the fjords or very close to them.
At Stavanger we did the RIB ride which took us right into the fjords, Olden you sail in ( get up early 5am to enjoy) and again sailing out is stunning. Sailing out of Hellesylt was equally stunning. The ship moves slowly through the fjords so you see the best of them.
We either sat on our balcony or up on deck to enjoy the views or the Crows Nest Bar when it was too cold to be outside.

Choose the smaller p and o ships such as arcadia which is an adults only ship

Husband and I did a Hurtigruten Norwegian fjords cruise. Only 275 passengers on the ship. Choice of shared table or table for two at each meal. No pressure to speak to anyone we didn't wish to. Only issue is that they don't leave from Southampton. We left from Dover but I don't think they do that now.

Yes I would be tempted but definitely don't want to fly-cruise.

We did a Fjords cruise with P&O a few years ago, it was very similar to this one https://www.pocruises.com/find-a-cruise/B509/B509

We are also very anti-social and found it very easy to avoid speaking to people, especially if you do freedom dining and are flexible about when you want to eat.

No issues with turbulence and the views we're outstanding! Enjoy whatever you book @WishIMite

I went on P&O Iona a few years back. It sailed from Southampton and was so smooth it was like glass. I easily suffer from seasickness but was absolutely fine on this ship. I don’t mind sharing a table but it was easy enough to wait for a table for 2 in the main dining room.

The ports were nice enough and I enjoyed sitting out on deck watching the world go by. Iona is a beautiful ship, really elegant.
