Passport - reassure me!

I'm having a paranoid panic about my passport...

I'm travelling to Madeira in August 2024. Passport date of issue is February 2015, expiry is November 2025.
That's fine, right? It's still valid for my trip? I remember reading something about some new 10 year rule a while back...

Thank you!

Why can’t the printed expiry date just be the expiry date 🤦‍♀️

It used to be. But if you had a passport issued before Brexit then any remaining time you had on your passport was added onto the end. Since Brexit it goes from the issue date only and the extra time is ignored

The printed expiry is still valid for working out if you have 3 months remaining on your passport

You add 10 years to the issue date when working out of it's under 10 years on the date you travel to the EU country

Thank you so much for clarifying. The amount of contradictory info out there is unbelievable!

Thank you everyone.

I've read in a few places that it's the border guards decision as to whether they'll require 3 months or 6 months left remaining on the passport. I have 3 months, but not 6. So this is worrying me...

If you read my explanation above it’s two separate calculations one for when you enter Europe and one for when you leave. So you have well over a year left on your passport by the time you are due to leave Madeira.

But even though the passport expires November 2025 you won’t be able to travel with it after February 2025 because on ENTRY to Europe the passport has to have been issued less than ten years ago.

So the 3 months is worked out from the printed expiry date of November 2025?

I'm so confused! I'm reading in some places that the expiry date as written on my passport is no longer valid, and that my expiry date would now effectively be in Feb 2025. I'm reading in other places that the Feb 2025 is just for the "is the passport less than 10 years old on the date of entry to Portugal"

Edited

Your passport must have been issued no more than ten years before your date of entry. The issue date is what is printed in your passport.

It must not expire less than three months after you leave. The expiry date is what is printed in your passport.

For your intended trip, your passport meets both criteria.

That was why I showed the actual EU rule in my previous post. 🙏
