Denmark - where to stay before Billund? I love pretty quaint places like Bergen in Norway

So we are heading to Oslo for a few nights then getting the ferry down to Copenhagen and going direct to Malmo for a night. We have 3 nights to spend anywhere in Denmark before we are then booked in to Legoland Billund. We were going to do the obvious thing and stay in Copenhagen but now I am looking at Odense and Aarhus and thinking actually they look lovely and peaceful for a few days or would we regret not doing Copenhagen?

I think 3 days in Copenhagen would be fine. Although it is the capital city, it is far quieter and less stressful than many other European cities and has a nice chilled vibe. There's plenty to do in and around Copenhagen - see the Visit Copenhagen website and read the threads on MN - and there are beaches, Viking ships at Roskilde, Tivoli and Bakken for funfairs and entertainment, Experimentarium and more.

Odense and Aarhus are nice too, and if you had plenty of time (and a car) I'd recommend Sønderborg in the very south of Denmark, or Ebeltoft (east of Aarhus) as places to spend a day or two - but with just 3 days, you should stick to Copenhagen and then make your way over to Billund. Hopefully you've booked Lego House as well as Legoland (Lego House is much better) and maybe look at WOW Park too.

Thanks so much for this :) yes we have the house and Legoland booked as well as the castle hotel at Legoland. It promises to be a very busy 12 days I think

Ribe is a very cute town not so far from Billund, you can probably see it all in a couple of hours but might be nice for a half day excursion with lunch.

Agreed - Ribe, or Tønder a bit further south, make nice day trips from Billund, but only with a car. Billund is well-connected by public transport to Vejle, but connections south and north are not good, despite the relatively short distances.
