Recommendations for a smart NYC hotel

I like staying in Sofitels and similar generally for short city breaks, however the Sofitel in NYC is grim. Any alternative suggestions? Around midtown area but could go a little further out of that vicinity

Staypineapple in Midtown is excellent, I had my last stay there.

There's also a Liberty Bagels, a Starbucks, a 7/11 and a Dunkin all within a 2 minute walk, which is handy for breakfast or snacks.

We always stay at the Marlton in Greenwich Village. It has a colourful history and has writers and actors who lived there. The staff are incredibly friendly.
