How long should I wait for my travel insurance claim to be processed?

We started the process of claiming on our travelling insurance 10 weeks ago, and submitted all necessary documents a week later. Despite this we have only ever had generic acknowledgement emails in response any time we have tried to contact the insurers. Is it standard to have to wait so long without any human acknowledgement? For the record, it was a medical claim with associated expenses for having to prolong our stay by two nights - so hotel, food etc (in the USA).

I would chase them via phoning them. Ten weeks is a long time to process a claim without any proper acknowledgment.
