Where to go in May?

My boyfriend and I are looking to go away in May, but have yet to pick a destination. Any other time, I’ve had an idea of where to go or it’s been decided beforehand so it’s just been a matter of picking where to stay, but I’m at a loss this time!

budget is about 1k each, ideally would be about four hours max flight time (can push this a little), doesn’t need to be particularly hot necessarily, bur would like ‘nice’ weather. Ideal airports are Birmingham or Manchester.

i don’t want all inclusive resort type places (we can have that sort of holiday with the kids, but they are away with grandparents that week!), I’d love somewhere with things to do and some culture, but also somewhere we’re able to relax. Doesn’t need to be a hotel, happy to book an air bnb somewhere too, I wouldn’t mind a city break type trip but one that could stretch to 4-6 days (so somewhere like Barcelona is probably out)

does anyone have any suggestions?
we’ve not long been to chania which was lovely but we stayed at a villa so had to drive everywhere. We’ve looked at cruises but it’s top end of the budget for the lowest package.

Chamonix in France. Stunning, amazing hiking. Can see Mont Blanc

Palma (Majorca), and commute to nice beaches or sights by bus. Or indeed Barcelona and explore up and down the coast by bus or train.

Thank you, palma could work well - I’ve not been to chamonix but I’ve been to Les arcs and it’s lovely but we’re not really hikers!

Sorrento? Lots of nice restaurants and you can easily get to loads of places for great day trips like Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, and Amalfi, Positano, Ischia.

Ooh I’ll look at that, that sounds right up my street!

If you do stay in Sorrento this is a great, traditional place to eat.

And we always have amazing meals at Delfino though I would not recommend going down there without a booking.

May is the perfect time to visit places like Pompeii, which just become utterly impossible in the hotter weather.

I'd second Sorrento. There's lots to visit along that coast. We had 6 days last year and we saw pompei, herculaneum, naples on the train, boat trip along to positano and amalfi. We hiked up vesuvius too. Enjoy planning!

Honestly, the more I look at Sorrento, the more perfect it seems. It’s not overly resorty, not hustle and bustley like a big city (I love New York but relaxing it isn’t), and it’s also a country neither of us have ever been. I’d have never come up with it on my own 😘😘

@dizzyupthegirl86 it is lovely. It is a little touristy (because people go on holiday there!) but in a charming way. You'll love it!

As back ups-Sicily or Dubrovnik could work well too?

dizzyupthegirl86 · 27/06/2024 20:09

I was considering somewhere like Dubrovnik actually, it looks beautiful!

We've just been to Otranto in puglia and that part of Italy is beautiful and unspoilt. It's still very good value, too! Brindisi airport is the nearest

I wouldn't do Majorca in May. The weather could be better here. We went and it rained for a week.

How about a couple of nights in Rhodes Town then Symi?

Both Dubrovnik and Sorrento are beautiful. If you did Dubrovnik you could also do a few nights on one of the islands. We did Sipan and Kolocep which were stunningly beautiful.
