Weekend away for a 30th birthday

Can anyone give me some recommendations for a weekend away for a large group for 30th birthday celebrations at the end of the year. Looking for central to south Scotland or northern England and baring in mind it is winter, don't want to be remote and want things to do in immediate area.

Self catered or hotel?

Durham, I've recently been and was really surprised how nice it was.

Durham is very nice, also very small and not masses of things to do. What are you after op- nice meals? Nightlife? Big city or pretty town?

@Pootles34 because it's winter would prefer large town or city with things to do
