Day trip to Sydney from Melbourne?

Visiting relatives in Melbourne and, as it may be my only visit to Australia, would love to see Sydney. I think the rellies would be disappointed if I took a few days out (only there for 2 weeks). Is it feasible/worth it to do a day trip to Sydney? Internal flights look reasonable. I was thinking hop on hop off bus tour and take some photos of the Opera House and Bridge.

I'd let them be disappointed and go for a few days. It's a long way to sydney and you'll see very little without at least one night there, but 2 as a minimum

Frankly if I'd got people coming that far I'd expect them to travel around a bit!.. have you mooted this idea to them?

I did it! Staying with my DD in Melbourne, we took a morning flight to Sydney (was just a couple of hours IIRC), took the train from the airport through to the port, saw the bridge and opera house, took a ferry up to Manley, spent some time on the beach there, then ferry back, train back to the aiport and back.

It helped that DD had been there many times before and knew what transport to get and what to see, but, to be honest, I was happy just seeing the bridge and opera house (I've been back since and know there's more to Sydney than those two things, but if you're only going to visit once then those are the things to see). It was a busy day with an early start and late finish, but we did it!

You need to be tough here. Melbourne is gorgeous. (My fave city, but it’s the most European city in Aus). You need to tell them ahead of time that you will
be in Sydney from x to x to see these things. (I would go mid-week so that things are open and so that flights are cheaper and you have weekend with family.)

Yea it’s doable but I would suggest one over night stay to get the most out of it. And yes take the midweek flights - much cheaper!

You have to say it, and if any of the many threads about house guests mean much, the relatives could be delighted that you are leaving for a few days. Respite for them, joy for you!

There is no way that I would travel all the way to Oz and not visit Sydney if it's feasible, which it is for you!

Go for it. You will regret it if you don't.
