I am planning a trip to Berlin / Dresden / Leipzig in September. Travelling by myself. Just wondering if anyone has any good tips - galleries, museums, places to eat. Or places to avoid? I speak German so I am happy to wander around on public transport and day trips will also be on the agenda. I am already planning trips to ballet / opera / theatre.

From Dresden, I’d definitely recommend a day trip out to Saxon Switzerland, either by public transport or by tour.
Apply for tickets to visit the Reichstag. It’s completely free and you get a great view, but you might want to book early as time slots do fill up! We timed our visit for twilight and it was magical watching all the lights come on.

Museum island in Berlin is great, we especially liked the Pergamon. If you want a fun museum then the DDR museum is good. Very envious, I love Berlin.

We also enjoyed the Reichstag though we went early to the Ticket Office and just got tickets for the following day as had left it too late to get them in advance.

The cycle tour of Berlin was great. We learnt allot.

Thanks for the tips. I always forget about booking visits to museums etc early and then get annoyed when I am confronted with a huge queue!. I will be sure to try to book online this time around. Last time I was in Berlin was 30 years ago in winter and I confess I didn't love it - even tho in theory its everything I should love. I know it has changed massively so it will be interesting to see how I feel.

The Pergamon Museum is currenlty closed. The Deutsches Historisches Museum as well. They do have a small exhibition, Roads not Taken though.

If you are interest in WWII and the time before friends recommended Berlin Story Museum. Depending on your time, the Sachsenhausen KZ is nearby and accessible by public transport.

We will also go for a day to Potsdam and especially Schloss Sanssouci.
