Has anyone been to Fiji?

I have this strange hankering to go to Fiji. I've never been before but I have been to another Pacific country.

I have this idea of spending 3-4 weeks just going island to island and sleeping and reading and swimming. Would this be totally boring?

Fiji is fantastic.. beautiful beaches and warm sea full of fish if you like snorkeling or diving.

Many of the islands are rather rustic though. Some I stayed on had brief but frequent power cuts . I was not on a top budget though.

From the UK it's a very very long journey though. There are probably other places that are just as nice but more accessible.

Yes.

Not Fiji itself, but the Yasawas and the Mamanucas, 20 odd years ago on my gap year. We sailed around using a company called Awesome Adventures which dropped us off for several nights at each island and slept in huts (Bure's) and ate in a group. Complete paradise - white sand, coconuts, crystal sea. Sailed to the island where Castaway was filmed and saw sea snakes, amazing jungles and treks. Would love to go back.

I went to Fiji about 20 years ago, and it still ranks as one of my most favourite places in the world.

When I went some of the islands were very basic with frequent power cuts or power only on during certain times of the day, and on some of the smaller islands there was only 1 choice of accommodation. However, it was breathtakingly beautiful, the people were so welcoming, and the culture and history was fascinating. If you have the chance, please go, I hope I manage to go back some day as well.

Yasawas and the Mamanucas are part of Fiji!

I loved Fiji & island hopping when I went years ago. Beautiful beaches & snorkelling. Not sure I could go for 3-4 weeks. I spent a week there whilst on a longer trip to Australia. Stayed on two islands and did a day trip to another once I realised the below…

One thing I wish I knew in advance is how different the islands were to each other, not just facilities wise but also beauty. Not all looked like the idyllic pics you see. One was so drab & windy all the time that you couldn’t even swim. Only people that went were tourists on package tours…like me!

I regret not focusing on the two beautiful islands in the area I went to, which would’ve better justified the trip. Instead I had to make do with a day trip during my week.
