Wondering about an apartment or villa in Bulgaria or Croatia or thereabouts. Want to be near beach, prefer not to have to hire a car.

getting around Croatia without a car is difficult. there are buses and ferries obviously but the trains are slow and not worth the effort IMHO.
If you wnat to stay in one place, try Hvar town on Hvar Island or Dubrovnik. Milna on Brac Island is quite nice too. If you want to see things without a car then maybe you should look at using the ferries and doing some island hopping. Hotels aer expensive but privately owned villas and apartments abound.Villas are often divided into two apartments. The tourist board star classification is a bit screwy though(it is based on size not quality), so as a general rule you are better looking at a place owned by a foreigner who has renovated.
There is strong local pressure not to give discounts. Croats don't like it(they think happy hour drinks imply that they are too cheap to buy the full price ones). foreigner owners follow local practice if they know what is good for them!

island hopping: www.jadrolinja.hr is the national ferry company who runs almost all the ferries
