Northern Portugal / Porto

Looking for ideas of where to go / base ourselves on a trip to Northern Portugal in August. We will have a few days in Porto itself but then will have another 6 days and not sure where to go? DC's are 13 and 10. They like beaches / pools but also happy to walk and explore / sights etc too. Can anyone offer any tips of locations to look into? I haven't booked the return flight yet so potentially could return from Lisbon or Porto. Looking to spend 8-10 days there in total including the Porto bit.

DH and I spent a few days in Porto last September, it's a great city!
We did a day trip to Vila do conde which might meet your needs: porto-north-portugal.com/vila-do-conde-portugal.html

Hi
we've stayed on the Silver Coast before at Praia del Rey, but this year drove from Porto to Sesimbra near Lisbon. We stopped on the way at Praia de Mira and all said how lovely it was. Lots to do around there- Aveiro, Óbidos, and we drove to Sintra from there which was lovely. Oh or Lourinha is also nice. Great surfing and bodyboarding on that coast 😃

We’ve stayed near Lourinhã and at São Martinho do Porto, both of which make good bases for exploring.

You can be adventurous and go further North to a mountainous area called Serra di Gerês, a place of wonder and beauty with wild horses. Stay with the Pousadas de Portugal Group. It has walks and lakes. On the way there stop by Braga, Viana do Castelo, Guimarães, Ponte de Lima all beautiful. From Porto go on a day trip to Aveiro. Ensure that in Porto you visit Fundação Serralves, the beach at Foz do Porto, cross the river and do as well Porto Wine manufacturer visit. Talk to the people, go off the beaten track - you won’t regret it.

I’m going this August as well and have booked a villa on the coast just south of Porto. Planning to access the city by train (approx 20 mins I think) and use a hire car to visit other towns/places of interest in the area… most of which have been mentioned up thread. Flying both in and out of Porto.
