Where abroad for 3/4 nights (not city break)?

Any suggestions? Thinking I don't want to travel too far the other end, maybe somewhere a bit warmer (Sept/Oct), beach would be nice, if not a river/lake. Just somewhere to potter, shop, go on walks. Ideally we'd fly from Bristol, Birmingham, East Midlands but guess we could do Heathrow.

Some of the beach resorts close to Malaga might suit you.

Fly to Nice and take the train along to either Antibes or Menton.

South of France. It's lovely in autumn. Or you could go over the border to north west Italy.

MissAmbrosia · 11/06/2024 14:52

Antibes / Juan Les Pins are lovely.

Fly to Geneva and then catch a train or bus to Annecy, a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains.

Palma, Majorca. Short flight, and transfer time x

Another vote for Nice, can get the train into the city from the hotel, everything is walkable in the city and you can train along the coast to Monaco for a fun (expensive!!) day!!

Agree, Nerja is approx 1hour from Malaga. Pleasant weather then, shops and cafes to mooch, bus to Granada for Alhambra is doable as a day trip. Bon voyage

Sorrento, not far from Naples airport, can also visit Pompeii

RadRad · 11/06/2024 19:58

Tuscany
Provence
Bavaria

What about Malta? There are a couple of villages/small towns on the east coast and city of Valletta on north coast, not far from the airport.

Going to Cambrils for 4 nights next week.

Jet 2 flight to Reus and then a 20 minute taxi from airport.

We went to Kotor in Montenegro end of Sept for 4 nights and it was glorious. Stunning scenery, fabulous food, loads to see. Tivat airport 15 minutes from Kotor so no time wasted there. We flew with EasyJet from Gatwick.

We're going to Santa Eularia in Ibiza for 4 nights soon. We're going to swim in the sea, walk along the coastal path and probably take a bus to Ibiza town for the day and also one of the smaller places on the north coast.

I've seen a lot of Jet2holidays adverts for Kotor @ReplenishMyCoffee but when I looked into it, there was nothing available wasting their time then. Is it easy to get around on public transport to interesting places? We'd be interested in castles and other ancient monuments, parks, beaches, picturesque towns etc? Plus is it reasonably priced to eat out etc?

Bjorkdidit · 12/06/2024 17:07

I think for a short break OP, it's good to use where the well timed flights go as a starting point. Once of the reasons we're going to Ibiza is that we can fly out in the morning and be there at lunchtime on the first day so we can go to beach etc.

Then the return flight is in the evening to make the most of our time there. Some other places were 4 nights but only 3 actual days of holiday, because it was an evening flight out and a morning flight back, whereas we're having 4.5 days with the same number of nights away.

TheDogsMother · 12/06/2024 17:12

Biarritz is lovely

WavingTree · 12/06/2024 17:17

Malaga would be perfect to fly to. Short flight, then lots of nice destinations around.

it’s easy enough to book the flights and hotel separately if Jet2 don’t have availability

we didn’t use public transport so not sure but there are loads of reasonably priced tours, many of which are by boat. Highly recommend Perast and the cable car above Kotor.

eating out is average price I’d say, similar to Greece. Seafood is plentiful

Agree with looking at flight times

Verona and then train to Lake Garda (Peschiera) could be a good option

Balearics?

I just returned from Lausanne, I flew to Geneva and got the train to Lausanne.
My hotel was right on the lake and a lovely area for walking around and also had a beautiful spa and outside pool.
I took the ferry to Evian for dinner one evening, did a trip to a chocolate and a cheese factory (yummy tastings at both) and went on a train journey called The Golden Pass. I ate a lot of fondue and did a luncheon boat trip which with views to the wine region. I also had a little tour on the first day to get my bearings and went to some beautiful viewing points and the Olympic museum.

Have a look at Santander. Lots of beaches in the vicinity and beautiful countryside to explore. Great food too.

Most airports serve cities but you can head out to lovely coastal areas. Bordeaux and Nice are good shouts. I found Interlaken a good base for seeing fantastic Swiss countryside and mountains with some amazing train rides added in!
