Booked holiday- now reviews have gone downhill

Let me begin by saying i know how fortunate we are to be in this position!!

Booked a much needed holiday after a terrible year with bereavements, illness and jobs being unstable. Things are finally looking up, we are more financially stable, and decided on a real treat for us and the kids. Spent a small fortune on an all inclusive at a luxury resort with 5* reviews, but thought after the year from hell everyone needs it.

Excitedly counting down.

Visited trip advisor yesterday, and the reviews have gone downhill this season. Since opening people are saying terrible service, too few staff, food gone downhill etc.

I feel so sad. This was meant to be the holiday of a lifetime, we have all been so excited, and now it runs the risk of being a flop!!

Suppose there's still 6 weeks for the resort/hotel to 'pick up' but realistically thats unlikely to happen, isn't it?

What can I do to try and make this better? Things to take with us, plans to make?

Booked with Jet 2 if that makes any difference.......

OP there might be a FB group for the hotel you can join to get more information, unfortunately Tripadvisor does tend to attract extreme reviews.

Also worth emailing hotel management, saying that you have seen these issues and you're very concerned having booked the hotel based on previous excellent reviews. May not do anything but gets you on their radar.

It is possible to change hotel I believe with Jet2 but possibly only up to 90 days in advance or big fee. Worth ringing them up anyway as they are usually very helpful.

Great tip!!! There is a fb group and nobody is saying things like TA on the group! Thanks so much- don’t know why I didn’t think of this!!

You've had a name change fail, OP.

3girlsunder3 · 12/06/2024 09:39

Haven’t been to that one sorry Op, but have to others in the chain. Usually v nice, can book a la cartes in advance if you download the app which I recommend to do - haven’t a hope of getting in them once you arrive

It looks like a perfectly lovely summer holiday destination, their 5 star is what we’d think of as 4 star. I wouldn’t be changing it.

If it's Greece you will be absolutely fine for local tavernas if needed . We've been all over Greece and rarely had a bad meal .

You'll never please everyone review wise.

Go with an open mind and I bet you'll have a ball.

Sarahspice80 · 26/08/2026 19:55

How was it?

Trip advisor is pretty useless these days IMO. Very few people (me included) post reviews routinely any more, they only think of it when they're unhappy.
It's TA's own fault IMO, it's difficult to navigate these days, showing you whatever it fancies and feels like just a selling front. I think its days are numbered.

I agree. I used to do all the places we visited, but I e run out of steam and can’t be arsed.

If this thread is turning into a general discussion about reviews then I've usually found Booking.com pretty reliable.

I think I've only been to one hotel with good reviews that I didn't like and even that was clean and safe- it just didn't have the right vibe for me.

I do spend a fair amount of time reading them properly though - one place had a moderate rating overall but when I read the reviews it was mainly being marked down for awkward parking - which we didn't need. Turned out to be perfect for us.

I always write them - it's a virtuous circle - I'm usually pleased with a place so want to give them a Thank You.
