Travel insurance for under 18s

TheCompactPussycat · 09/06/2024 14:58

Has anyone had to get travel insurance for an under 18 travelling in Europe? DD isn't travelling with family, but is travelling with friends who are 18. She's 17 years and 50 weeks when she goes!

Any recommendations for insurance companies that can cater for this?

Also recommendations for a bank that will let her use a debit card abroad.

Allianz is the only company that cover under 17 on a trip without an adult

I've just come across them and it's looking hopeful.

The thing is she isn't without an adult. She's with 5 adults. But they have already bought their separate policies.

I’d also try the Post Office as they can cover under 18s.

GoHenry do debit cards for teens.

The Love it Cover it I took out for my under 18 was an annual one, reasonably priced as well. This was last year so I don't know if they currently offer child-only insurance. I think I found it on one of the comparison sites, to begin with.

Thanks. I didn't get as far as a quote with them as they wanted the main traveller to be 18.

Have at look at the Nationwide FlexOne account, that gives a debit card that you should be able to use abroad.

Allianz do not cover this at 4th August 2025. That's what their customer services just told me.

Post Office must have someone 18 or over travelling with the child else they will not cover. They told me this today 4th August 2025.

Love it Cover it need them to be met at either end by someone over 18, or be travelling with someone over 18. Thats what their customer services just told me 4th August 2025

Save you all some time as this type of cover is trickier to find than you may imagine.

Speak to Direct Travel Insurance on 0330 880 3600

They had cover from Brokersure Insurance, underwritten by Whitehorse, this is a specialist provider. Cost for 1 week Spain for 17 year old was £21.88

Ignore these people who will appear on comparison sites claiming to offer under 18 cover but are NOT VALID unless they have an Adult with them :

Post Office
Allianz
Love it Cover

Hope that saves someone the 2 hours I just spent researching !

Chase and Revolut will also let you use your debit card abroad, without fees. DH got a Revolut account with an extra card for DS when he went on a school trip abroad last year.

wonderpetsrus · 04/08/2025 11:41

Starling account easy to open online and can use debit card abroad

DS went to Canada aged 17, 3 years ago. I just went on money supermarket and got insurance through there.
