Where else would I like that's not Austria?
I'd quite like Germany if anyone has any specific recommendations of a similar sized town/vibe/setting.

Anywhere lakes and mountains I would think. Neuschwanstein in Germany, Lake Bled Slovenia, French alps too.

Dolomites in Italy? So many beautiful places there.

Have a look at Fussen in Bavaria.

Haven't been to Austria yet (6 weeks and counting) but loved Slovenia.
Lake Bohinj is more natural and dramatic, with hiking, waterfalls, cable car.
Lake Bled is beautiful and has the town, lake beaches.
We stayed by Bohinj and took the bus to bled for a day which suited our preferences.
Soca Valley would be fab too.

Slovenia.
or do half in Slovenia and then half at southern Austrian lakes (Millstatter see, Ossiachersee, Worthersee). They are all only around 90 min drive from Lake bled
