Rhodes

Hi,
We are trying to book a last minute summer holiday. Obviously at this stage availability and cost is tricky.
What are people's thoughts on Rhodes? I mean in terms of forest fires, would you be worried?
It looks beautiful, there is much more available and it's decent value. My husband is thrilled but I'm concerned it's cos no other sod is crazy enough to go there this summer!

My daughter and her bf are there right now.

They have fires most years , last year it was just particularly bad and I doubt it will put anybody off . Apparently it is going to be 36 there this week .

We've just booked for rhodes for summer. Got an incredible deal. I figure there can be fires anywhere hot and dry and they'll be on high alert after last year anyway

Marmose · 06/06/2024 12:05

The fires do seem to have put people off because prices are lower than comparable destinations this year.

Rhodes is gorgeous and different to many Greek islands. Rhodes town is one of the most preserved medieval towns in the world. There's wonderful history and culture.

There's a few tacky resort areas so research wisely. Lindos is lovely.

DD has just messaged to say it’s 37 degrees right now, and this is May. Would be much too hot for me.

it’s too hot for me , my sister used to live there and we visited in June and it was too hot even in her pool for us . She still goes out twice a year to see friends .

Just came back from there, it was great! No concerns at all about fires (we even had some rain!). It was “only” 27 - 30 though, personally I don’t cope over 30 degrees but if that’s not an issue then go for it.
Hotel we stayed in would have been at least £2k more expensive on other greek islands, there are definitely deals to be had

Please consider going, don't let the fires last year put you off. I have visited Rhodes numerous times - it is such a beautiful island, with the friendliest and most welcoming locals you will meet. When I was there last year, the locals were saying how tough things had been trying to rebuild businesses and livelihoods after the fires. They rely heavily on tourism, if everyone stays away, the locals and their already struggling economy will really suffer.

They have forest fires in some areas of the island quite frequently, most years in fact, but last year was particularly bad. If you want to limit the risk, I would suggest staying in the Trianda area, around Ialysos or Ixia. From here, you can easily travel by bus, excursions or by hiring a car and getting to places like Rhodes old town, Lindos etc.

The island has so much to offer. If budget allows, please also consider going self catering/B&B and not all inclusive, to also help boost the local taverna's who really need all the extra help they can get this year!

We've booked for summer in one of the towns affected by last years fires. Looking forward to getting out and exploring Rhodes, fires haven't put us off at all.
The heat there now i believe is an unusual heatwave and doesn't mean summer will be even hotter.

AnnaMagnani · 06/06/2024 13:47

How hot do you want your holiday to be?

Rhodes will be very hot, likely 40+ even if it is not on fire.

Notstrongandstable · 06/06/2024 15:02

Thanks all. We are looking at an Airbnb/Booking.com villa/house. Couple of contenders on the south(?) side. Not too far from Lindos/St Paul's bay.
Flights and accommodation are considerably cheaper than other islands, I've been scouring!
I realise there are fires in lots of places. We normally go to France and the region we've been To a few times was devastated by fires 2 summers ago. It's just they were so high profile on Rhodes last year and I'm a worrier.
We'll probably go for it as options are limited otherwise.
The heat really does concern me but that's a whole other thread! I'm taking one for the team this year

I wouldn’t be put off by the fires, out of anywhere they will be most likely to have extra precautions in place I’d expect. But the heat … last time I went it was mid 30s up to 40 and I found it really hard. And I’m a sun lover usually. However if you plan to be in the pool or sea (or an air conditioned building or car) most of the time it should be fine.
