Travelling to Spain
Date of Issue: 11/09/14
Expiry Date: 11/06/25 (so originally valid for 10years + 9months).

Not 100% sure if I will be able to use this for a trip to Spain on 15/06/24? I think it will be OK, as I am reading the official gov.uk guidance:

• have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
• have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.
You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

But still have doubts, and it's too late to renew now, as existing passport will become invalid whilst waiting for new one.

I think since brexit, passports are only valid for 10 years feom their issue and the printed expiry date is irrelevant. In which case you won’t have 3 months left when you travel.

Yes, that's how I'm reading the rules too!

Just too many horror stories of people getting rejected because of the ten year rule.

But it's still under 10 years since issue. And it will still be valid for three months after return. Just worrying that there is an arbitrary expiry date of 11 Sept 2024 (ten years after issue). But I can't see any rule surrounding that.

I will hold off renewing til return from this trip.

Does your passport have less than 10 years from the date of issue on the date that you travel to the EU? YES.

Does your passport have more than 3 months until expiry on the date that you plan to return home from the EU? YES.

It's fine.

The 3 months required until expiry can be part of your 9 added months, so long as the passport is still less than 10 years old on the day you go on your trip. So you could use it for travel on 10/9/24 but not on 12/9/24.

The extra months don’t count any more beyond 10 years . ( renewal because of getting married ) I got caught out with this .

You can use any added months as the 3 months required until expiry, so long as original outbound date of travel is within 10 years of issue.

(My job involves checking passport validity, I am 100% confident on this).

Yes my outbound wasn’t and as I was hoping to travel the next week at that time the extra months were a bit of a moot point .

You can travel with this passport to Spain as long as your return date is before 11 June 2024

So its ten years old on 11/09/2024, fine for Spain as your fly out date is before 11/09/2024.

The extra nine months don’t count anymore so it’s actually valid until September of this year.

OP can travel until 10/09/2024, the day before her passport's 10th 'birthday'.

Her extra months can be used for the 3 months she needs between return travel date and expiry date, but since she can only be in the EU for 90 days it will in practice become defunct 90 days + however many days she's on holiday after the 11/09/2024.

No, because the expiry is now September 2024, the expiry date printed on the passport is irrelevant as it's not recognised. So you need to have 3 months prior to September 2024 on your passport to be able to travel.

Wrong. The 10 year limit applies to the outbound journey and the original (extended) expiry date is the relevant one for the return date.

@FlyingAfterDark That's incorrect. The expiry date has not changed, it's 11 June 2025.

The passport cannot be used for outbound travel after 11 September 2024 though, 10 years after the date it was issued.

The 3 months remaining until expiry that's required for travel to the EU can be part of the 9 'added' months.

As per a previous post, this is my job to know and I've advised many people who have successfully travelled over the past couple of years.

For outbound travel you look at the issue date and count 10 years to get the expiry date. You can travel up to that calculated date.

For the 3 months remaining part you can go by the printed expiry date. The 3 months don't need to be within the 10 year period you calculated as they are separate conditions you need to meet
