Do you like going to the same place on holiday?

peebles32 · 30/05/2024 21:46

When I was younger I used to love seeing different places and travelled (not extensively) and worked abroad.. However, now I am happy to go to the same place on holiday.
I think because me and DH both have stressful jobs, I like to go somewhere I can wind down straight away.
My friend thinks I am boring and missing out but I have no desire to see other places.
I once went on a weekend with her and was exhausted as she had a packed timetable.
I was the same when younger but now menopause has hit I can't be bothered.
We have a family apartment in a lovely rural area of Spain and just go there now. Same place in the UK too.
Occasionally it is nice to go somewhere new but as I get older I just want to relax on holiday.

We mostly go to different places, there's so much to see in the world. But there's a little hotel on a tiny island in Thailand that's just perfect, so we have been there 3 times and will go again.

LaPalmaLlama · 30/05/2024 21:49

There are a couple of places we go on repeat tbh- one is a ski resort as i just like knowing how all the lifts join up and not constantly having to check piste maps. It’s a huge ski area anyway. The other is when we stay with some friends at their house and again, I kind of like the predictability of it.

PinkLadyLove · 30/05/2024 21:50

Depends on how long we're away for to be honest. If it's a week, the same Greek island is perfect. Two or three weeks, more willing to explore.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/05/2024 21:52

We like a mix.

RedWineIsFine · 30/05/2024 21:52

Yes, I would love to see more places, but quite often we just need the break. DH is a bloody workaholic who rarely does less than 6 days a week, so going to the same place means it's instant relaxation. We've headed there several times when we've had a stressful time, and have booked there again as I'm recovering from surgery and it stops me wanting to explore.

Where is that? We are planning a trip to Thailand next summer

I think what you do sounds great @peebles32

Your friend is rather rude describing it as boring. Holidays are intended to be about doing what you please.

peebles32 · 30/05/2024 22:02

I agree! Holidays are to do as you please. I just relax straight away.

Bountifulbarbie - It's Glow Elixir on Koh Yao Yai.
It's not a super fancy hotel by any means, no activities really (unless xmas or new year) or kids' clubs, and there's almost nothing on the island, no bars or nightlife or such. But it just has this vibe, I haven't found anywhere as peaceful and relaxing. Handful of restaurants around, and there's a guy just up the street that organises all the tours and transfers you need. As the hotel is tiny, by 2nd day the staff will know your names and preferences. Ah really missing it now.
(never been in summer now, so can't comment on that)

Never go to the same place twice. I want to explore the world.

Saying that have been to South Africa 3 times but each a different experience.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/05/2024 22:15

I like going out and about and exploring and find it hard to shut off and lie on a sunlounger all day like some people do. In fact I just don't do that anymore. I don't like squinting at a book in the bright sunshine, even if I'm under an umbrella. And I'm stuck with going in school holidays so find many places abroad far too hot to sunbathe.

But I'm quite lazy at weekends when I'm at home so when I go away I like to make the most of where I am and see stuff. My late teens sons are the same. Sit on their PC all their lives at home. Go away and holiday and they are like a pair of puppies all excited to be going here, there and everywhere.

We have been to places more than once and it IS easier not to have to look everything up like where the nearest supermarket is etc, cos you went last year and know where everything is. But I wouldn't go to the same place more than twice I don't think. Once I've seen all there is to see in an area, walked all the walks, tried all the restaurants, done the historical sites, well, I just want to try somewhere new.

I would never think someone boring for wanting to do the same holiday every year. We are all different and relax in our own way. And our tastes change as we age, or go through a different life stage anyway.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/05/2024 22:16

And anyway, OP, you have "been there, done that" as you say. You should enjoy your holidays YOUR way. Your friend is short-sighted, and a bit rude.

UK - we like to stick to Wales, Lakes, Northumberland.
Abroad - we would always like to try new countries.

SallyWD · 30/05/2024 22:32

No. I mean we have been to the same places a couple of times especially if there's loads to see (I'm thinking places like Rome, Florence and Paris) but generally we like to explore new places.

Nourishinghandcream · 30/05/2024 22:38

We go to Ourgate for our holidays.

Lots of short trips away throughout the year visiting favourite places in the UK (Hants, Dorset, West Country, Cotswolds, etc) but holiday destination is always the same.

feellikeanalien · 30/05/2024 22:43

Can't really afford lots of holidays abroad although I'd love to take DD to lots of different places. We go to the country she was born in. She loves it and it brings back so many memories for me. Especially since her Dad died 4 years ago.

GordonBlue · 30/05/2024 22:43

Like a pp I do a mix. I've been to Venice three times and will go again I'm sure.

Your friend sounds rude. Enjoy your holidays.

Summertimer · 30/05/2024 22:50

I love places with mountains and hills. In the UK I find the Lake District and Scotland appealing and often return to same bases to explore.

I love Cornwall for rugged coastal walks and surf. We’ve often found the same 3 or 4 places to be good bases.

I can never quite feel the same about the Dales or Derbyshire as I do about the Lakes and Scotland. Same re Devon v Cornwall.

It’s this that makes me return to the same bolt holes in the same places.

Re outside UK, I don’t have the same loyalties with the exception of Florence. Just because DH has lectured there for years

WithIcePlease · 30/05/2024 23:06

Sounds fine to me OP

Life can be exhausting (DH works 50 plus hours a week and is no spring chicken) and so going somewhere where you don't even have to think is comforting and relaxing.

DSis went somewhere different last year - she has one holiday a year - and will be going back to her normal destination this year for the 15th time

Just had a look, oh wow!

YorkNew · 30/05/2024 23:15

I’ve repeated two hotels abroad and been back to the same place eg. Rome numerous times. Ideally I like to go to new places but as I travel really a lot so do some repeats too.
In the UK I’m happy to do repeats especially to my favourite spa hotel which is like home from home for me.

RampantIvy · 30/05/2024 23:15

We have been back to a handful of places again but no more than twice and, in several cases, the same country but a different place.

Having spent over 30 years going to visit family in a nice part of the UK has made me realise that I never want to own a second home or go back to the same place year after year after year.

MrsAvocet · 30/05/2024 23:31

Depends what you mean by going to the same place. I've been to some countries multiple times and to some cities/general areas more than once but they've always been very different holidays if that makes sense? We might be visiting different areas, or going at a different time of year, for a specific event or because we identified something of interest that we didn't get to see or do on the first visit.
But I know some people who go to exactly the same hotel or apartment every year - that wouldn't appeal to me at all. I'd never want to own a holiday home either. We have some relatives who own a holiday home abroad and they've been going there every year for nearly 30 years. Every year's photos are of them on the same beach, eating in the same restaurants, walking in the same scenery which I don't think I'd enjoy after the second or third visit. They love it though. I guess if I was rich enough and had the time to have a second home and have other holidays too I might like it, but that's never going to happen! DH and I have never had more than a week off work together since we met so we like to do as many different things as we can with our week away.
But a holiday is meant to be fun and we all like different things so do whatever makes you happy OP, it's nobody else's business.

longdistanceclaraclara · 30/05/2024 23:42

I always said I wouldn't be the person to go back to the same place but now we are
Going back to the same place
For the fourth time this summer. It's just works with the age the kids are, and they love it and ask to go back. I'm just going with it for now.
