Do you like going to the same place on holiday?

When I was younger I used to love seeing different places and travelled (not extensively) and worked abroad.. However, now I am happy to go to the same place on holiday.
I think because me and DH both have stressful jobs, I like to go somewhere I can wind down straight away.
My friend thinks I am boring and missing out but I have no desire to see other places.
I once went on a weekend with her and was exhausted as she had a packed timetable.
I was the same when younger but now menopause has hit I can't be bothered.
We have a family apartment in a lovely rural area of Spain and just go there now. Same place in the UK too.
Occasionally it is nice to go somewhere new but as I get older I just want to relax on holiday.

On one holiday each year I like to go on a cruise. You visit different countries but your accommodation is the same and that suits me well. I also like a holiday in France most years in my holiday home for a couple of weeks.

Penguinsa · 31/05/2024 00:11

Prefer seeing a new place each time and can relax easily on holiday. Have been to Venice a few times .

40somethingme · 31/05/2024 09:27

We do both. We love travelling and try to see a new country every year but there is one location that is just 10/10 perfect for us as a family so we keep returning there for our main holiday.
For us there is no need to keep looking for another family holiday when we’ve found perfect. I cry happy tears every time we arrive.

3 times to one place tends to be my limit, with the exception of a certain beach in Pembrokeshire.

Some places once is enough, others it feels like there’s either more to explore still or that I could do it “perfectly” next time.

Barafundle?

I have been to Sark three times.

MinnieMountain · 31/05/2024 14:57

Whitesands @RampantIvy .

I used to think it was boring but since having my DC, who have autism, we go to the same house on France most years. We've tried a few different places but nowhere suits us as much.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 31/05/2024 15:01

I used to be aginst same place but now older and more fragile - going back to the same area is reassuring

We mostly go to different places, there's so much to see in the world. But there's a little hotel on a tiny island in Thailand that's just perfect, so we have been there 3 times and will go again.

@Orangello can you DM me this place it sounds fabulous and so want to go back to Thailand

ladybirdsanchez · 31/05/2024 15:12

No, I like to explore different places, but I don't work so I have the energy to do that. I think if I had a demanding job I'd want to just relax, read books, swim, etc. I don't mind an odd day of doing that, but I have no interest in flying off somewhere and spending the entire time in the hotel/grounds. But each to their own. It's a good thing we don't all want to do the same thing!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 31/05/2024 15:29

We go to different places abroad but we go to Cleethorpes several times a year overnight or a caravan break.
It's got everything we want and only an hr away.

Kitkat1523 · 31/05/2024 15:45

Love to see new places so always looking for fresh place to see
apart from,
been vendee in France 8 times when kids were young cos they loved it there
been Western Australia 4 times….got family there
been Rockies in Canada 3 times as eldest DS lives close by

quizzys · 31/05/2024 15:55

For fly flop and sun its the same place always. Not much difference between any sun holiday to me! I instantly relax since i know my way around, have figured out the trains, boats and buses, know the nicest beaches and restaurants etc, from the moment I arrive.

For other trips I'd never repeat a destination, the world is too big and so much to see and do.

We go to the Lake District at least once a year on the quest to bag Wainwrights, and have been back to stay in the same places. The in-laws live in Oz so we have had stopovers in Singapore, Maldives and Hong Kong on more than one occasion. However if it's a holiday, and not a trip to see family, so far that's always trip to somewhere we haven't been before.

siameselife · 31/05/2024 16:23

I like a mix.
We have a small lake cottage that we visit as much as possible and my dc like the same small ski resort.

But I also enjoy a road trip to a new area, we are doing a Route 66 trip in the summer.

OhshutupBarbara · 31/05/2024 16:24

We go to Sri Lanka every Jan/Feb and then try and have a September break somewhere in Europe. By Jan I need somewhere hot and we adore Sri Lanka even though there are so many places to see we just never tire of it.

Mrsjayy · 31/05/2024 16:26

We usually go to Dorset once a year even if it's for a few days we love it. Abroad holidays we like to go different places for some sunshine.

TheNoodlesIncident · 31/05/2024 16:40

My brother and SIL are of the "never anywhere twice" bent. I suppose they get satisfaction from ticking off places as visited, as well as enjoying their time there. I do see the appeal of that but we also like to revisit places we've been to before and really enjoyed, because as PPs have said, knowing the people and where everything is located is just more relaxing than exploring a new place to find all the aspects that you're looking for. It's exciting to visit somewhere different and I wouldn't want to be in the position of only being able to go to the same place forever, but sometimes the appeal is in the comfort of knowing your favourite ticks all your boxes!

The best of both worlds is to go to your happy holiday place and also be able to try exploring somewhere new and different. Two holidays are outside a lot of people's grasp unfortunately.

Ilovegoldies · 31/05/2024 16:45

I do. I go to Nerja on the Costa Del Sol. Its not that I don't want to go anywhere else its just that I can't afford to go more than once a year and we love it there.
It doesn't mean we don't explore. We've been to Segovia, Granada, Malaga. This year we'll be going to Ronda.

Jaxhog · 31/05/2024 17:22

Go where you want. I'm a bit of an explorer so like going to new places. That's what I find relaxing. But not everyone does.

We've been to France every year for the past 14 years but never to the same place. I love finding new towns to explore.

We also go to different UK/european cities 2-3 times a year too and long haul once at least every 18 months.

The world is a big place and I want to see as much of it as I can whilst I can!

Someone I used to know takes 2 holidays a year. One to wales and one to Dorset, staying in the same place in both locations. They have done this every year since their youngest (now 18) was born. I just couldn't limit my kids experiences just because I like a certain place.

Orangello · 31/05/2024 18:30

My ex-boss went to Hawaii every year. Now, if you go to the same place because it's convenient to reach, or it's cheap - totally understandable. But Hawaii? Could literally see most of the world with the same time and money.

Sallyingon · 01/06/2024 08:30

We always go somewhere different because I want to see and experience as much as possible. I've always been totally on board with that decision but our last two holidays were so good they left me feeling like I haven't finished and I really want to go back to both places and do it again. Maybe twice would be enough, maybe I would always want to be there. I think perhaps there's a lot to be said for going a bit deeper..so yes, if I had the money I would love to be a repeat visitor AND a new one!

spriots · 01/06/2024 08:36

I'm not very good at relaxing - something I realised from Mumsnet - I don't know if it's just my personality or my ADHD diagnosis but what I find refreshing about holidays is doing lots of different things and seeing different places.

I can do a day on a beach if it's warm enough to swim but any more than that and I am bored.

With the kids we usually do destinations where we can mix beach days and sightseeing - e.g. Crete, Barcelona
