I flew today for the first time since lockdown and I think I can safely say that lockdown has definitely made people less considerate of others.

We had a kid with a slide whistle. Both parents had headphones on!!

And a father and son who kept play fighting behind us. Why do grown ass dads insist on riling up kids play fighting!

😂I definitely don't do any downward dog or shoulder stands! Strictly vertical at all times!

Ilovemyshed · 04/06/2024 16:57

Overnight flight back from the US when masks were mandatory. Bloke in business class seat behind me refused to wear one. Eventually put one on for take off. Had to be told over 20 times through the night to put it back on.

@CrispieCake the fucker. I would have kicked his seat!

My worst was during a long haul flight with my 3 year old (which I had obviously prepared for). This was before tablets etc. I had a steady supply of colouring, stories, little toys etc, we flew a lot and I knew how to keep him quietly entertained.

A family behind me had nothing for their similarly aged child - NOTHING! So what did they do? Sent him across the aisle to sit with me and my ds, pulled on eye masks and tried to go to sleep! They steadfastly ignored their little one every time I sent him back, and I felt bad for him so wound up essentially babysitting a stranger's child during an 8 hour flight while they slept!

This reminds me of a long haul flight I was on with a couple sat a few rows back with a baby. It cried and cried. Neither of them could quieten it sat down, and they didn't get up at all. Eventually a random woman sitting in another row suggested she take the baby and walk it up and down the aisle. (Big plane so wide aisle). Baby fell asleep. Parents still sat in their seats, not moving 🤷🏻‍♀️

greenpolarbear · 04/06/2024 17:33

Sat down on the plane in my assigned middle of a 3 seat row, thought nothing of it. Next thing the guy sitting next to me calls over an air steward and has a long conversation with him.

Air steward says to me, "He asked for me to move you to a different seat because he doesn't like that you speak a different language to him." (apparently he spoke German and Turkish, and I speak German but anyway. It was more likely because of my skin colour, but whatever).

Anyway apparently the air steward told him he could move if he wanted, but he wasn't moving me. The guy decided not to move, so that was just a really awkward several hour flight.

So I'm taking away from this thread that the worst offenders are people who can't be arsed to parent their kids and businessmen.

IsAnybodyListening · 04/06/2024 17:42

Coming back to the UK after visiting family in Spain. A couple of young women, maybe 20 maximum take the seats directly in front. They were filthy and stank of booze. I guessed they'd pulled an all nighter the night previously to make the most of their holiday. The woman in front of me, as soon as she sat down proceeded to recline her chair right back into my lap, then flipped her hair in my face. I asked her what she thought she was doing and she needed to put her chair back. In fairness to her, she said she was bloody knackered 🤣 And she did put her chair back after a lot of mumbling.

FakeMiddleton · 04/06/2024 17:58

I have no real issue with seat recliners...but my last flight where the couple reclined whilst we were still boarding/taxiing took the piss. Thankfully a short haul but just THE LACK OF MANNERS and self awareness

Littlebitpsycho · 04/06/2024 18:12

I'm a very nervous flier and always quietly tell a member of staff when I board, and always book an aisle seat in the first 2/3 rows so I can see the cabin crew (it calms me that they look so calm!)

Some twat in the front row heard me tell the crew and promptly started telling me how terrible the weather was going to be, and that the flight would be really bumpy and might get struck by lightning. He really got to me and I was very tearful when preparing for take off.

Thank god for the head of cabin crew who heard him and told him that if he didn't pack it in and behave, she'd move him to the back of the plane. A lovely man in the row in front of me offered me to sit beside him for take off so he could chat and distract me (take off is my worst part)

Luckily after take off I had the whole of my row to myself and had an excellent sleep - twat man was surrounded by noisy teenagers (I like to think they'd heard him being a twat and decided to make his flight miserable) 🤣

The amount of litter left when we got off was insane!

TBF it was always shocking pre-covid as well. A lot of passengers think they're entitled to cause as much mess as they like because someone else will clear it up.

LakeTiticaca · 04/06/2024 19:01

All of the above are reasons why I'm.not a big fan of flying. I've had the long hair dangling over the back of my seat and blocking the TV screen. Filthy look when asked to move it. Sitting in an aisle seat and having smelly scabby bare feet stretched out from seat behind onto my armrest. That one was told to shift his stinky plates of meat within seconds 🤢
Cathays Pacific, Hong Kong to Heathrow. DH in aisle seat, me in the middle, random young woman in Window seat. Random.young woman curled up asleep in foetal position, head against the window, her arse pointing in my direction. Kept letting out silent farts. Seriously it was fucking vile 😫

So annoying! It's bad enough having to deal with your own kids during the flight let alone having another few tacked out. They're all tired and grumpy at that age and they wind each other up. And so lazy of the parents... they might at least have offered to take turns with you providing the entertainment!

DreamyCyanFinch · 04/06/2024 19:12

Flew business class which was a real treat for me.I used to work with babies, in a nursery so very used to babies.
Was sat in a row one seat away from a very angry mother with a baby. Her partner seemed to be very doteing.
Anyway she changed her babies nappy in the seat next to me , never spoke to me, I said hello and was ignored. She didn't wash her hands before the food came.( Her husband was in the seats opposite all quite strange.)
I really did not enjoy sitting with her.
I didn't enjoy my food, I wondered if I should say something, but decided I knew how hard it is with a baby traveling.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/06/2024 19:15

I had a rare treat today-a window seat as away in Majorca for a few days before H comes out. He usually bans the window seat. emergency exit- so good leg room-sadly spoilt somewhat by the 6ft 5 , 20 stone or so guy next to me in middle seat. If you are a really big person wouldn't it make sense to pick an aisle seat and pay for it - instead I felt really really hemmed in

Brendabigbaps · 04/06/2024 19:22

Recent 4hr flights. Both ways, the dirty women, yes 2 different women, sat behind us thought it was acceptable to put their dirty bare feet between our seats.

dirty dirty bitches

HumerousHumous · 04/06/2024 19:28

Years ago a guy who removed his trainers at the start of a long haul. Suffice to say I'd rather have had a block of Stilton on my lap than his feet. I complained. His shoes went back on.

Just curious but did you say or do anything? I'd have slapped the feet out of the gap.

DD flying home 5 days post-op from major spinal surgery. First class seats, disabled assistance booked and airline aware. Parents behind allowed their child to kick her seat for the entire hour long flight, despite numerous requests from both me and the cabin crew to control their little darling. I would never allow my child to behave like that in a million years, never mind when it was causing someone in an obviously vulnerable position huge amounts of pain

I'd have hoped the seats were far enough apart in first that you couldn't kick the seat in front!!

How terrible for your dd. I'd have been tempted to get up and kick the kid. Or he could have moved to behind you so he was kicking the back of your seat instead??

one way I did, it was on my daughters seat and she’s autistic and a meltdown was brewing because of it. She did move it.

the other way i voiced my disgust loudly and the husband told her to put them down.

Schools and some parents are not teaching children to think of others any more and the effect that their actions can potentially have on others for good or bad.

Childhood has become a competition to get the best grades and don’t give a stuff about anyone else as long as you are ok.

Page 2 before we got the 'they should teach this in schools'.
Doubt you've been in a school lately, but the race for results isn't the only focus. In fact that concept is laughable.

The woman who thought it OK to read a broad sheet newspaper by resting it on my head on the seat in front of her. Ashamed to say that after asking her to stop it twice, when she did it for the third time, I reached up, pulled it forward and screwed it up.

Brilliant!! 💪

Chypre · 04/06/2024 19:39

Now, I do agree with you OP, but also can't ignore the overall conditions that airlines are putting people in (shrinking the seats even further, making waiting and boarding even more complex/disorganized/rushed, last minute announcements about no food/water available on the plane), with ZERO consideration for the passengers.... If I would have a whistle, I would be blowing it, too.

I run a lot of school trips. My students are not allowed to use their phones unless they have headphones-anywhere but especially not on public transport.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 04/06/2024 19:44

I fly a lot and I destest people (it's always men) who spend the whole journey bumping their elbows into my side.

Stay in your own space.

Simonjt · 04/06/2024 19:47

Flying with our kids not too long ago, our then seven year old was being great but I noticed he kept watching the woman in front of us between the gaps in the window seats. She was watching the US version of queer as folk! So not only did my son see some spicey scenes before I realised, she was sat with her child who looked 5/6 years old! I mean its a great show, but theres a time and a place.

When I flew with our then 6 month old I sat down and the people on the same one loudly complained they were sat next to a baby, she was perfect and slept for the majority of the flight. Where as they were rude to staff, kicking the chairs in front, the man next to me was all elbows.
