Things that hotel maids do that are annoying...

Currently staying at a hotel in Europe. Each morning I make my bed but leave a sign on the door for maid to clean like empty bins, clean bathroom etc.

Every time I come back to the room she's unmade the bed and bed sheets/duvet presented on the end of the bed in a folded multiple times square lump. I have to unfold whole lot!

I find it odd!

So my question is, what annoys you in hotels that the maids do?

I've noticed since COVID that room service in hotels in UK have declined so much.

It’s common for housekeepers to be in the habit of leaving a pile of clean towels every day. Even if you hang yours up to show that you are happy to use them again. Even if there is a notice that says ‘reduce your carbon footprint by hanging up your towels to show you will use them again’
infuriating!

Somepeoplearesnippy · 26/05/2024 22:16

A lot of hotels now have little cards that say if you hang up your towels you can reuse them and they won't change them. I have yet to come across a hotel where the housekeeping staff take any notice of this. They always take the once used, hung up towels away and replace them with freshly laundered towels. I'm guessing it's because it's easier for them to lay out 4 nicely folded clean towels and make the room look neat than to faff about making used towels look smart.

The other thing that drives me mad is hotels in North America where the staff turn the AC down to about 16c while they make up the room and then leave it on when they have finished. Fair enough, they need a cool temp while they are doing physical work but they should turn it off when they have finished. It's so wasteful to keep an empty room so cold.

@ParrotPirouette just seen we both get annoyed by the towel thing.

I have never stayed in a hotel that housekeeping fold up the bedclothes at the bottom of the bed. I tend to make my bed, but they come in and do a better job of it.

I’ve had this happen in Austria/Germany - double beds come with two single duvets, and each one is folded up nicely at the foot of the bed each morning.

I’m not a fan, but it is quite tidy.

tuck the duvet and sheet in so tight at the bottom of the bed. so I have to undo it all before I can go to sleep otherwise my toes are squashed

BathTangle · 26/05/2024 22:27

In a very hot country where I took the duvet out of the cover and stowed it neatly in the cupboard so I was just using the duvet cover as a top sheet. Every day they put the duvet back in. However everything else about the care the staff took was amazing, so it wasn't a big deal.

Tuck the duvet into the bottom/sides of the mattress. This really infuriates me... just why?

My new cleaner does this. It infuriates me. The kids love it, they say it's like being in a fancy hotel 🤨

(She's perfect in every other way and it's been a long quest to find a good replacement for my retired cleaner!)

I always put the "Do not disturb" sign on the door and ask them in the corridor when I want to swap towels or need extra loo roll etc. I'd far rather they didn't come in!

Same

Lulu1919 · 27/05/2024 08:48

I hate cushions and 'pretty / decorative ' blankets they often cover the duvet with ..soon as I go into a hotel room I take them off and fold into a spare drawer ..reason is I doubt they are washed between each hotel resident
Every morning after the room has been serviced they put them back into the bed ....arrgghhhh

PinkPondQueen · 27/05/2024 09:10

Re-arranging all my make-up & toiletries next to the sinks. It may look messy to them but it's my organised chaos!

Bjorkdidit · 27/05/2024 09:21

I starting to think that all the 'hotel' cushions and other bed decorations are liked/valued by almost no-one other than 'branding executive' types from Head Office, because many on this thread don't like them, and I'm sure the cleaners don't like hunting them down in/on top of wardrobes etc to put them back on the bed because it's likely part of the tasks that they are required to do.

Sounds like how shops instruct staff in making inane small talk with customers that no-one actually wants and ends up feeling like an interrogation half the time but similar head office people seem to think enhances the customer experience.

Bundtbake · 27/05/2024 09:37

I worked in a very posh hotel as a chambermaid in my teens.
One day I found a used condem in the bed, so I left it there and made the bed.
The next day when I pulled back the sheets they had positioned two apples and a banana! 🤣😂

Georgyporky · 27/05/2024 09:38

Re-using towels may be environmentally friendly, but the real reason is that it saves hotels money.
I can't recall any hotel I've been in where there has been room to leave towels in a single layer to dry.

DracoDormiensNumquamTittilandum · 27/05/2024 09:42

The housekeeping staff will have training on how to make the beds - they have to follow their training unless you specifically ask them not to. They aren't doing it to annoy you.

Towel rail?

Hang over the shower rail/cubicle?

There's usually hooks or a chair too. Overseas hotels usually have an airer on the balcony or terrace too.

I always reuse my towels and have never not been able to find somewhere to hang them up to dry. I don't care whether or not it saves the hotel money. It's the right thing to do for the environment.

Yeah let’s all slag off those minimum wage workers cleaning up after other people’s shit…

ffs what a thread to start 🙄

MadKittenWoman · 27/05/2024 10:38

It's not the housekeepers' fault but it's what they are told to do. We tend to leave the 'Do not disturb' sign up most of the time, or make one if they're not supplied. I can't be doing with having to tidy everything away so they don't have to poke around with my stuff to clean.

Last place we stayed at, at an aparthotel, we were getting pestered at 09:00 when we either having a lie-in or having a leisurely coffee on the patio. The worst one was where we arrived at 10:00 at night and they were insisting on cleaning the next morning. I told them this and that we didn't need anything but they insisted I at least take a new towel.

I agree about all the cushions on the bed; we always put them elsewhere. The strip of cloth, I assume, is to stop the case wheels dirtying the bedding while you're unpacking. It also gives me the rage when they leave the towels on the bed. They belong in the bathroom!

OMGsamesame · 27/05/2024 10:45

Urgh I hate it when people put a suitcase on a bed to unpack (at someone's house). It's so rude!

At hotels they tend to have either a plinth for the case or a sling or both. Counterpane is decorative, I thought.

EBearhug · 27/05/2024 10:45

The case doesn't go on the bed!

I assumed the cloth was for people who get straight on the bed without removing their shoes.

OK call it "things you hate about hotel housekeeping practices", then. I think everyone knows it's not the fault of the workers themselves

Lilacwall · 27/05/2024 10:52

Urgh to suitcase on bed
