Things that hotel maids do that are annoying...

Currently staying at a hotel in Europe. Each morning I make my bed but leave a sign on the door for maid to clean like empty bins, clean bathroom etc.

Every time I come back to the room she's unmade the bed and bed sheets/duvet presented on the end of the bed in a folded multiple times square lump. I have to unfold whole lot!

I find it odd!

So my question is, what annoys you in hotels that the maids do?

I was staying at a Hilton in the US recently and they didn’t make the bed at all, or do any tidying, emptying bin etc. In the morning I asked the lady who was along the corridor with her cleaning trolley and she said I was on her list for that day. But again no bed making or tidying when I got back that night (though this time she emptied bins and reorganised towels from where I’d hung them up).
I’d pulled up the bed clothes and am not hugely messy so it wasn’t a huge issue obviously but it certainly wasn’t the nice hotel experience I’ve had before. Is this a thing in the States (or at a Hilton)? A colleague suggested that it was a post-Covid change).

@Screamingabdabz No one has slagged off the cleaners/housekeepers themselves! We are all aware that they work hard and put up with a great deal of shit (literally) from customers- same as carers and other low paid workers do.
We are also aware that they are just following the rules of the hotel they are working in.

If you can't see this is lighthearted and more about the weird rules the hotel has, and NOT slagging off the actual person cleaning- then I suggest you move onto another post.

In a very hot country where I took the duvet out of the cover and stowed it neatly in the cupboard so I was just using the duvet cover as a top sheet. Every day they put the duvet back in. However everything else about the care the staff took was amazing, so it wasn't a big deal.

I often do this and realised I needed to mention to reception that I didn't want the duvet back in. I've never had a problem once I remember to to that.

@TwixOwl I'm currently on holiday in Norway and they do the same here!

Yes. And?

A friend of mine used to do housekeeping in the hotel. Unless the room was marked as do not disturb then she had to carry out a set list of tasks including making the bed the hotels way. She had a supervisor who would check x amount of rooms daily and ensure that everything was right. She knew that sometimes it annoyed guests but she got in trouble if she did not do it the hotel way

When they knock to clean on the day you are checking out, check out isnt until 12 but theyre annoying you at 10am

Tuck the duvet into the bottom/sides of the mattress. This really infuriates me... just why?

Me too

I've noticed since COVID that room service in hotels in UK have declined so much.

Yes, in Scotland when I am paying over £300 a night I expect the room to be cleaned every day. I am not blaming the staff, who were really nice but management for a lack of staff. I asked if my room was supposed to be cleaned and told ‘only if you request it’.

LumiB · 27/05/2024 15:48

Although not a housekeeping annoyance more of a hotel room one bloody temperature never changes I can say sat it for 18 and it does fuck all. Why bother then. Urgh

I always put the towels in the shower so I get new towels. I would reuse but I don’t trust them not to rearrange the towels on the towel rack. I share most things with my husband but not a towel. I once did take to marking the label of a towel in pen and yes they were swapped around.

Jeannne92 · 27/05/2024 15:57

Occasionally there are little things that aren't 100% to my taste but I appreciate the housekeeping staff are 'just following orders' and I couldn't care enough to ask the hotel or chain to consider changing their entire policy. I also appreciate them for doing a shit job for shit money.

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 27/05/2024 16:48

I don’t think I’ve ever had bad service when staying in hotels.

Maybe we have just been lucky.

nokidshere · 27/05/2024 16:48

I share most things with my husband but not a towel.

Given that he is probably clean when he's used the towel and assuming you share bodily fluids what's wrong with sharing a towel?
