Greece - So many islands, which one for us???

Hi,
I am looking for advice on which island(s) might suit us best for a 7- 10-day break in mid-September.
It’s just me and DH so we would like something quite special without breaking the bank!
We have never been to Greece so I am finding the choice of islands is pretty daunting.

Things we would like;
Somewhere easy to get to – we would prefer a direct flight from a London airport and no more than an hour transfer from the airport to where we are staying.
We love to eat out so not looking for an All-Inclusive hotel. We like to explore so somewhere close to a town/village with good restaurants/bars would be ideal (walking distance or reasonable taxi distance) although this is a supposed to be a relaxing holiday so not looking for full on sightseeing, just somewhere with a bit of charm.
All of the islands look like they have lovely beaches, and we would love accommodation within walking distance of a good beach.
In terms of accommodation, we would prefer a small boutique hotel with the benefits of a big hotel! So a decent swimming pool, and a bar. That said – we would also be happy self-catering in a small place with its own pool but needs to be pretty special.
We usually book everything separately rather than a package holiday so we are happy to do the same for this, so if anyone has direct links to properties feel free to share them.

If anyone has any recommendations I would be eternally grateful as I have read guide to nearly everyone of the bloody islands and cannot see the wood for the trees - they all look gorgeous!

TIA

Just some places that come to mind initially - I’ve focussed more on what you want from the hotel than the island or the town, so it might be you want a different vibe of either

Abaton Island Resort & Spa, Hersonissos (make sure you fly into Heraklion rather than Chania)

Aqua Blu Boutique Hotel, Kos

Lango Design Hotel & Spa, Kos

More Meni Beach, Kos

The Olivar Suites, Corfu

Emelisse Nature Resort, Kefalonia

Lindos Aqua Terra, Rhodes

Casita Casita Lindos, Rhodes

Perfect thank you - a starting point! I will take a look

we did a Rhodes and Lindos last year, 3 nights in each which was liovely.

currently in Crete at Minis Palace and it is out of this world. Ticks all of your boxes.

has its own beach, adults only, in a lovely small town. (Agios Nikolaos). Fly to Heraklion

I love Skiathos, small island so nothing is to far to travel to, beautiful beaches and there is a regular bus service that runs from the town all the way along the south coast of the island with numbered stops so getting around is easy. I've been 4 times now and planning another trip this year.

Oku - Kos
Olea Suites - Zykanthos
Maiya - Rhodes

I’ll focus on the islands rather than hotels!

Chania, Crete - lovely town, great island, so much to do. I think Chania much nicer than hersonissos.

Agree with Skiathos, lovely town some gorgeous beaches.

i do t think kos island is as nice as the above although there are some lovely hotels.

Mykonos is now a bit expensive and cruise shippy.

Kefelonia... so charming, so chilled.

We loved skiathos. The harbour is fab with loads of restaurants and the beaches are sandy. It's beautiful.

cherryassam · 18/05/2024 16:06

Atrium Hotel or Aegean Suites Hotel on Skiathos might fit the bill

Piggywaspushed · 18/05/2024 16:21

Look up White Rocks in Kefalonia. Lovely hotel with own beach and a nice public beach nearby.

Just back from here - absolutely lovely!

Hotel Mediterranee in Lassi Kefalonia is fab!

Bohemond23 · 18/05/2024 16:32

We are going to Domes Zeen Chania on Thursday. Also love Elounda (both Crete) but that is a longer transfer.

MadKittenWoman · 18/05/2024 16:32

Crete is gorgeous. Look at Chania or Rethymno.

We are currently on a sailing holiday around Greece and corfu and by far one of the best holidays I've been on. Different beach every night. Have visited some really idyllic spots off the beaten track
