Any interesting suggestions for single mum w/teen son on budget in Aug

A big ask. And I've looked at some old threads but there may be some welcome new obscure suggestion out there. I'd love to camp in France but he feels too self-conscious with a single parent on campsites, as families tend to big wherever we go. And his dad and partner holiday in a big group so that box is already ticked for him. He'd prefer a city break with me (we really enjoyed Copenhagen). Any budget suggestions with stuff to do, that would suit a young teen. He likes a waterpark. And/or a beach for me is a bonus. Many thanks

Are you happy with it being very hot?

City breaks with a beach might work for you:

Lisbon
Malaga
Valencia
Alicante
Nice
Pula

Malaga and Valencia if you would like a beach. Also Barcelona.

no beach but lots of thermal spas, history and relatively cheap is Budapest. It’s beautiful.

Thank you both - @Chocbuttonsandredwine I'm going to go research Budapest & Valencia
@cherryassam Pula sounds interesting......

Pula is fab! Great mix of beach, history, watersports, markets, art, food.

When you say budget, what kind of numbers were you thinking?

How about Duinrell water park in the Netherlands?

We (single mum and teen DD) like flying to Slovenia and going up to the Soca Valley for camping. You can rent a car fairly cheaply in Ljubljana (great city break, very green and relaxed), then drive to the valley. Swimming in the Soca is brilliant, very clean and cool. If you want something extra, there's lots of hiking routes and nearby Bovec is well set up for zip lining, hang gliding and that kind of stuff.

How about Billund in Denmark?

Big waterpark complex with other activities, Legoland and Lego House. There's a Center Parc style accommodation option or you can rent an apartment. You can also get a bus to Aarhus, Denmark's second city, which is just over an hour away on the coast. Fly there cheaply with Ryanair from Stansted.

Thanks! @cherryassam I'm looking at under a grand for flights & accommodation, but for 5/6 nights and later August when price goes down. So, I was looking at Budapest last night after suggestion, and that would currently cost about £800 for flights/basic accom
@jazzhands84 Slovenia sounds amazing! But maybe too rustic for him, one for me in the future

Athens
loads to do and see, not too pricy, fantastic food and you can get the bus to Vouliagmeni/glyfada which has a wonderful thermal lake and gorgeous beaches. You can also take the ferry for the day to Salamina for next to nothing for the island experience.
air bnb and easyJet flights will help keep down cost. Plus it's lovely and the locals are really friendly.

Outside the box but went to Gdansk for a wedding, it's a beautiful city and near the coast (Sopot area is by a lovely beach). Eating out & shopping was cheap.
Also <2h flight from UK.
Not crazy far to go to Warsaw too, you can get a train. Fly in to one then home from the other, 2 cities in one holiday!

DancefloorAcrobatics · 14/05/2024 13:13

How about Black Forrest in Germany.

Plenty to see and do... you can book self-catering or B&B, travel by public transport can be cheap. There is Konuskarte (for tourists) and a few other schemes to get people off the road!
Plane goes either to Basel (Switzerland) or Baden Airpark...
Freiburg, Baden Baden or Karlsruhe are lovely... and then there is of course Europa Park Rust (Steinwasen Park is smaller, less crowded) , Hasenhorn coster and Badeparadies Schwarzwald ...

Obviously something for the more adventurous!

Hi there, sounds amazing! I wouldn't recommend Budapest personally.. food isn't great and there isn't much to do. I would say more Lisbon/Seville way, it sounds like that's what you are looking for :)
If you fancy a cheaper deal then I would recommend checking out transfertravel.com - they have lots of holidays on there for places I wouldn't have even thought of!

hateexpensivepillows · 16/05/2024 14:53

Thanks! I was heading towards Budapest but now I'm going to check out transfer travel.com, Gdansk & Black Forrest. But I don't drive so later may be out .....
