America for first timers

So many destinations - what would you recommend for first timers?

We are 2 adults, 2 children. We love visiting tourist places and seeing architecture. We also love the beach. Not looking for night life.

Looking at multi destination trips which look really appealing, but so much choice still!

Why fly to Miami? There's lots of beach areas much closer to NY. Totally depends on time of year too. When Miami is pleasant, NY isn't. If NY is a priority then think about adding Boston via the train, then Cape Cod or go out to The Hamptons. Florida is its own holiday destination really.

Las Vegas is pretty awful. However in our autumn or spring it's the gateway to the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley and other superb National Parks in Utah and Arizona. All worth a visit.

I love Miami but I wouldn’t go there in the Summer holidays. It was almost unbearably hot last weekend there and that’s the start of May.

Arizona all the way. Sedona is a must see. Amazing scenery. Utah is pretty stunning too.

I don't need cities like we have in Europe, except on a smaller scale. Architecture is amazing in Europe.

Agree with this. Monument Valley is awesome. Reminds me of cowboy films as a kid. John Wayne had his own house there, he filmed there so much.

@MariaLuna

Cities in the USA have loads going for them. I've loved museums and art galleries and fantastic buildings from Chicago to LA. We've been to quite a few cities such as Philadelphia and Washington where USA history is all around you from memorials to the history of American Independence. We have found something special more or less everywhere. We just mix and match! Finding a college designed by Christopher Wren in Virginia was pretty cool!
