Where in Itlay with Switzerland day trip?

Hi

I'm trying to plan a 4 day trip late Jun (Sat - Tues if that helps) with ideally one day trip into Switzerland.

We're 3 people going, budget is well as cheaply as possible but would also like it to be a comfortable stay with views.

I'm thinking North Itlay but since I've never been, it feels like a like a lot!
We'd like to be near a train station so we can catch a train to Switzerland.
Any ideas where to in Switzerland would also be appreciated!

Why not just going to see the Italian Alps?
Sterzig is lovely, but I think you are better off going Merano from the UK..

You could stay at Como and take the train to Zurich. Como is beautiful, and there are ferries to the villages around Lake Come, so you would be able to see a lot of the area.

If you are interested in gardens, there are several famous large gardens around the Lake that you could take the ferry to.

You could take the Bernina express which starts and stops in Italy.

There are direct trains from Milan to Basel, Zurich or Geneva all 4-5 hours each way.
Milan to Locarno is about 2 hours.
