Solo trip to Venice

I'm planning to book a few days in Venice solo in July. I've been twice before a few years ago and love it but never myself so just wondering if anyone has been alone? Any solo dining recommendations for the evenings? Conscious that it's a very busy place but hoping it won't be too weird to hang out in bars and go for dinner alone! Plan to just wander around all day eating cichetti etc. Thanks :)

Sounds lovely! Osteria and Enoteca are more bar-like and informal, will often have counter seating or bar tables. But I think you would be totally fine in a more formal place too.

If you like classical string music have a look at the evening concerts in the Chiesa di San Vidal- we really enjoyed and you can probably get tickets in the am for that evening, or the next day.

July? I’d avoid. Hot and horrible. Later in the year is better.

Doesn't really bother me as I like the hot weather and tend to stick to the quieter areas!

You’ll be looking a long time for quieter areas in July.

I didn't go solo but the restaurants had a good vibe in Costello, less touristy as well (not sure about July though!)

TizerorFizz · 01/05/2024 17:10

Everywhere is busy in high summer.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 03/05/2024 15:51

I've done it solo, I mostly got pizza slices or pasta box takeouts and had a little picnic. A specialty there is a rolled sandwich like a pizza/burrito hybrid which was really good. The restaurants seemed a little claustrophobic.

Edited to add, this place had very good slices:

There's always someone trying to put a dampener on it 🙄 of course absolutely everywhere isn't rammed all day every day.

These people probably never leave the San Marco and Rialto areas.

There's a gorgeous little garden park out near Arsenale "Della Marinaressa" I think. The wide street filled with bars there is great for afternoon people watching. Locals walking their dogs in the park and cheap spritz and snacks. Lovely.

I also rate Bacareto da Lele. That's busy but plenty of room to stand and delicious wine and cicetti.

We found Lido surprisingly quiet in early July too so get yourself out there for a dip in the warm sea! Enjoy.

Biennial is on this year and worth a visit whilst you are there.

Venice is a lovely destination for a solo trip (although July would be too hot for me)

Once out of San Marco it is way less crowded.

I'd suggest a food tour as it's a great way to spend a few hours, and you get lots of recommendations on where to eat.

I found almost everywhere we ate from Venice food bloggers. TripAdvisor is not reliable for Venice as it's packed out with day trippers posting 'Best pizza ever!"

The only bad place we ate was on San Marco and TBH we only went there because I was hangry. Out of San Marco the quality goes up and you find places doing Venetian food.

Finally as a solo diner my top tip is take a book. It makes you feel so much less awkward.

Ahh I'm going to Venice for a solo trip in two weeks!!
I'm going for 3 nights and I cannot wait!
I will report back ...

"TripAdvisor is not reliable for Venice as it's packed out with day trippers posting 'Best pizza ever!""

The forums on there are.

@CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment sounds amazing! Thanks!

@TakeOnFlea Oh the place next to Bacareto da Lele is my favourite! Thanks for the suggestions 😊 as I say I do know Venice well just never been on my own!

@AnnaMagnani thanks for the tips! Yes I tend to avoid San Marco! And yes definitely going to take a book or kindle everywhere I go just incase 😊

@dreammattemousse ah nice! Hope you have a great time and any recommendations will be very appreciated!

Tbh I am one of the people who thinks Venice food scene is amazing as I do my research of where to go and avoid San Marco! I just feel a little unsure how restaurants would actually with a single cover etc but I'm sure it'll be great 😊
