Where in Austria.

So looking at this idea for a summer trip.
London to cologne, stay there for 4/5 days, go to phantasialand etc. Then get a night train from cologne to either Innsbruck or Salzburg, and stay there for 5ish days. Where is better out of those two destinations, where is more too see. Me dh, and DD (14) and ds (12). We will then fly back from either destination.

Ideas? Or anywhere else near there easy enough to get too?

There's not a lot in Cologne to keep you busy for 4/5 days.

There is lots to see and do in both. Salzburg in summer is still beautiful, but has gone rather like Venice in a "beautiful theme park" kind of way. With prices to match.
Innsbruck is still touristy, but feels more authentic. Flights back will probably be cheaper. (I flew to Innsbruck last summer for about £35)
I wouldn't stay in either city, both really can be done as a day trip.
We loved Seefeld (half an hour from Innsbruck- but a schlep to Salzburg for the day - doable though)

I spoke to a German friend about Cologne yesterday as we would also like to go to the theme park. She said there's not much there other than the unesco place, so I too am on the hunt for incorporating cologne into a longer trip. I've been to Salsburg myself a very long time ago and it was beautiful but I'm not sure my kids, approx ages as yours, would be thrilled. Look forward to see if others have ideas. Cologne seems last place standing for reasonable price flights from here!

We will be going to phantasialand for 2 days
