Anyone done Athens solo?

I'm wanting to travel to Athens for maybe 2-3 nights. I really want to visit the acropolis and the museum, it's probably going to be end of October so a bit out of season, but better temperature for me I think. However a friend was telling me there's lots of crime there in recent months, not safe for a female solo traveller, he'd be concerned for my safety and so on. Has anybody experienced this recently? And if anyone has any very central hotels to recommend too that would be great, thanks!

We went last October (me, DH and DS 12). Stayed at the Electra Palace Hotel in the Plaka area. It's near the acropolis steps and was perfectly placed for sightseeing. Weather was glorious. I had heard about pick pockets etc so we were cautious but didn't really feel any concerns.

I mean it's a bit of a sprawling shithole if I'm honest like Milan. But I didn't find it unsafe.

If you stay around the area by the Parthenon and all the various Amazing sites you'll love it

Thank you! I'll look into those areas. I'm a bit on the fence at the mo.

@jeaux90 that's kind of what my friend was saying, so it gave me a pause. He said it's not actually that worthwhile in person and there's nicer and safer places to go.

Avoid anywhere near Omonia. Stayed there with my 17 year old daughter. Interesting area… drug deals in front of us, threatening feel, even a cab driver who dropped us off was concerned for us. Plaka much nicer.

I don’t know it well but all the tourist sites in the middle are perfectly fine. I was over for work and stayed on a couple days alone to see them. He’s talking rubbish.

Yeah I was really unimpressed by Athens, not my first choice for a solo adventure.

I've been twice in the last 12 months. Once solo. Really enjoyed it. The Tripadvisor forums are good for the best areas to stay. I had an amazing Airbnb with views of the Acropolis.
I did some great day trips - Temple Sounion, Delphi, thermal lake.
Also fab food tour.
Always felt safe but I did have an airport pick up rather than take the metro on arrival/departure.

I love Athens, I’ve used a very simple apartment round the corner from the Acropolis museum. It’s a lovely part of the city with lots of good restaurants, some really nice walks and felt very safe - it was also in good walking distance of most areas of interest. I’d avoid staying around Omonia or Monistiraki Squares but fine to visit in the day time.
