Travel cot mattress, needed or not?

I'm going on a haven holiday with my 3 month old. I've hired a travel cot but it says mattress not provided. Looking on the Internet I've seen people say that with a travel cot the baby just sleeps on the base of the cot, and that it's hard but that they don't mind? Is that true? I'm looking at travel cot mattresses on amazon and they look quite thick which also concerns me?!?! I'm so confused. I would just take my bassinet but it won't fit in my little Golf with my other bags haha

Thank you everyone for your replies!
I have actually ended up just buying my own travel cot from amazon, that way I know it's new and I don't have to worry about what their travel cot is like. I've just tested putting it up and i see what is meant by the board with a bit of padding, though it looks rather comfortable to be honest.

Great idea also about using the pram bassinet incase he doesn't like the cot as well.

They are so little they don't really need the padding on the mattress - the thin ones are fine for them. It would be uncomfortable for us as we are heavy great lumps compared to a baby!

Def don't add your own, it's not safe to do that because of the mesh sides. It's a common misconception to think that you need to add an extra mattress but this isn't actually advised. I expect this is why they have said as people will have complained.

I don’t think they were even a thing 18 years ago

They were.

They were.

Here we go again, as I said further up thread:

Obviously, I meant the additional thicker mattresses not being much of a thing 18 years ago.
