Do most places accept payment by debit card ?

We are going for mini break next week, get there late Monday and travel back Friday morning - so there 3 full days .

We've just exchanged £200 into Forints - does that seem about right ? We'll need it for taxi from the airport and anywhere that doesn't accept debit cards . We've booked apartment so will be mix of eating out and easy snacks using mini mart near our apartment.

I’ve literally just got back. Cards accepted everywhere, no need for cash. We took £200 worth too but didn’t need it.

GiveHerEffervescence · 22/04/2024 19:13

The public transport is good. Bus to airport £5.
debit cards everywhere

itsgood2talk · 22/04/2024 19:19

Yes everywhere takes cards. Agree public transport so easy. Buses from airport so quick and cheap compared to a taxi. Very easy to get around

BeCosyLion · 22/04/2024 19:28

Download the bolt app for taxis. So easy to get about. Didn’t spend any cash, just card

Theimpossiblegirl · 22/04/2024 20:20

Don't get into a not pre-booked taxi, they cost a lot more. Public transport or bolt app all the way.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/04/2024 21:07

Thanks all . We'll be getting a taxi from the airport as we don't get there until the evening and are hoping to be able to get to the mini-mart before it shuts - but the Bolt App sounds a good call .

Debit card and pay in Hufs, watch for hidden service charges before you tip. I'm happy to tip but was charged as much as 27% service , which wasn't disclosed. And then tipped generously on top.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/04/2024 21:55

Ooh thanks for that @Lidlfix

Yes 15 percent is added to everything for service. It’s an expensive place.

giraffesaregreat · 22/04/2024 22:00

We didn't take any cash at all and managed just fine! Debit cards accepted everywhere and public transport excellent. Would recommend the BudapestGo App as makes it very easy to pay for travel.

Surprised that a previous poster said it was an expensive place. I thought it was good value compared with SE England prices.

Thatsthewayitisnt · 22/04/2024 22:03

We found food very expensive,
that’s what I was referring to. As in eating out. Portions very small too.

AlbanyNY · 22/04/2024 22:27

We found the food really good value, we were there recently.

Answersunknown · 22/04/2024 22:33

We thought it was cheap as chips!!

Thatsthewayitisnt · 22/04/2024 22:36

Must have been doing something wrong then!

Pottingup · 22/04/2024 22:39

We were there last summer and found eating out really reasonably priced.

CatStoleMyChocolate · 22/04/2024 22:41

If you get a taxi from the airport, go to the official stand just outside the arrivals terminal - they will take your destination and assign you a taxi along with a price. You can pay by card in the cab and just about everywhere else. Didn’t find anywhere where you had to pay cash.
