Cape Verde

I am thinking about taking my two kids to Cape Verde at Christmas.
Has anyone been and can tell me what it's like please?
We like doing things and being able to walk to restaurants.
kids age 9 and 13.
We have enjoyed Palma and Croatia recently. We liked bits about Lanzarote but didn't love it. We like the beach but wouldn't spend all day, every day there.
Thanks for your help.

My friend had an AI holiday there and said there was very little to do and she wouldn't go again. She did manage to read a lot of books though

If you like things to do then Cape Verde isn't for you. Still very underdeveloped outside of the hotels. Virtually nothing really to do. Few restaurants in Sal but nothing like Canary Islands or more established destinations. Islands are very small (something like 20km by 15km). I've been twice and would go back, but life is full throttle with an often traumatic job for me so I like doing nothing with no pressures to go see stuff.

Awful mucky place compared to beautiful Lanzarote.
You get harrased.
Most places remind me of Army housing estates .
Apart from the beach nothing much to do.
Then that's not clean either.

It’s like visiting the moon, honestly I was so bored! Unless you are the type of person who likes to sit by the pool all day and just stay at the hotel with AI I wouldn’t bother! We went on an island tour where we got to see where a golf course is going to be built and a hole in rock that is sometimes blue (it wasn’t when we went) it’s the only holiday I wanted to cone home early! I also didn’t understand why an island in the middle of the ocean didn’t serve much fish??

I will state I stayed at the island Sal and it was 10years ago so things may have changed!

We did a fun trip to see baby sharks in the sea, to float in the salt lake and to jump off caves.

Also rented electric bikes and cycled about for a day.

Fun day in the center checking out the markets and then going to local cocktail and karaoke bars.

The rest of the time was spent in the lovely AI hotel and chilling at the beach.

Would go back.

Jump off cliffs not caves!

Be prepared for haggling and people hassling you when you're outside of your hotel, especially if you're wearing an AI bracelet.

Thank you so much for your replies......I think it's probably not for us!

A friend of min has been a couple of times and yes, it’s basically just beach and sea.

I went after the course was finished. They told us on our tour of the highlights of Sal it had been planted with Bermudan grass as it could be watered with salt water. I think it's possibly the most interesting thing on the island as its the only bit I remember... ( blue hole also couldn't be seen, nor the mirage)

Bananadramallamas · 20/04/2024 21:09

Agree, there isn't much there, I hated it, and there was a lot of people lined up near the beach just waiting to harass tourists for money.

We’ve been to Cape Verde.

If you want a fly and flop holiday then it’s fine. You can’t swim in the sea very much because more often than not it’s too rough. The hotels are huge, so there’s lots of pools, a good number of restaurants and the entertainment was really good at the one we stayed at .

The islands aren’t dirty, they’re poor and they most definitely don’t resemble army housing estates. The people are absolutely lovely and can’t do enough for you. We absolutely loved it there.
