We're planning to go to Japan for two weeks next spring with our two teen boys (17 and 13). I think we've settled on an itinerary we're happy with - or rather my DH has insisted that we don't pack up and move around too much and we really want to spend some quality time in each place. So we're looking at:
Tokyo (6 nights) with day trips to Kamakura and Nikko
Hakone (2 nights)
Kyoto (5 nights) with day trips to Nara and Osaka
While I'd love to immerse myself in Japanese culture and history and binge on temples, our teens would die of boredom if we did that, so if you've been to Japan with teens were there any experiences or places that they loved? Our boys are really into Japanese food, so we'll definitely go to the Tsukiji fish market, we'll go shopping in Harajuku and take them to a Hedgehog café, but please hit me with your top tips!
I'm also trying to persuade my husband to spend a night or two at a ryokan (he'll struggle a bit with this, I think, as he's not one for pushing himself outside his comfort zone), but I think our kids would really enjoy the experience. Did your family do this? Did your kids enjoy it? Arigatō!
