Bag opened in transit - what chances of getting back missing items ?

Flight into Gatwick last night. Zip bag arrived on baggage conveyor with half opened with zip off its teeth, like it had been opend and hastily tried to close again. Went to the handling desk and got a number to call if anything is missing - several items, fortunately not valuable, aren't here when I've unpacked.

Anyone had success in getting stuff back in such circumstances, would they bag up loose items for reclaiming later ?

DId you fill out a PIR - Property irregularity form to register the fact ? You should write to the airline listing items and cost and damage to the bag - if it can / cannot be used again and then see what they say. If you did not get a PIR form then it will be hard.

It is highly unlikely that items lost in bags will turn up at Gatwick ..The plane has probably done another couple of flights by now. How very strange that she did not even offer to do teh form for you it is standard requirements if you want to make a claim . I would give it a go giving times, people you spoke to etc ..Good luck !

cheers, think they've taken the phone off the hook , guess today is fairly busy for flights there.

Curious thing is it was tipping with rain last night , all our other soft bags were wet except this one and it didn't look as if it had been lobbed onto the belt like normal , but placed. If a bag is opened to be checked (whcih could understand as it had toiletries bags and plugs in)there is normally a label to say so. They hadn't gone through the stuff and more expensive items are still there yet zip had been forced.

oh and it was probably their last flight of the day so may well have stood on the stand overnight.

COuld well have been but it does sound a bit strange as normally as you say it is soft bags that come out first as they are on the top of the trucks so as you say it would have been wet..I would contact the airline as it sounds as if the number will not get you very far!!!!

Good idea re airline.

I had all of my jewellery and perfumes stolen from my checked-in suitcase on the way back from honeymoon.

Unfortunately the airline weren't interested as I couldn't prove it was them that had been liable. The handling airports weren't interested either. Neither was my insurance company who stated that as my bags were checked-in I had as good as given them to a stranger to take care of and help themselves to!

Long story short, lost 500 quid of stuff and didn't get a penny in compensation.

I hope you are more fortunate.

Monarch are sending me a claim form - they think items are unlikely to turn up now . If anyone sees a pair of used CK boxers blowing around Gatwick ...

ok so have had a call and they are replacing bag, should arrive tomorrow . In post had a claim form including asking for proof of ownership of lost items - how do I do that for t shirt , boxers, adaptor, socks ...

Blimey am impressed..Good on Monarch ! I would list the items and if you can remember cost . If you can find them on the web print off how much would be to replace. They normally deduct a % for wear and tear.

I know, I was pleasantly shocked ! Have also emailed airports both ends so should hear tomorrow (well, from the Swiss one anyway!)if they happen to locate anything, with any luck .
