Destination in Europe for couple end of April or mid June not too hot

Destination suggestions for couple end of April or mid June (3-7 nights).

Nowhere overly hot temps ideally late teens or early 20’s max.

Good food, not overly hilly and not really into churches religious buildings, nothing to active or onerous (due to health) like pottering around and watching the world go by.

Thanks

PS would need to fly from the north or scotland so restricted with some destinations.

Italian Lakes? fly to Verona(lake Garda) or Milan

Itsanothermanicmonday · 10/04/2024 14:05

@LIZS is that for April or June please?

I was just about to suggest Switzerland but then I saw you said "not overly hilly" and, of course, Switzerland is famous for being quite hilly indeed.

Having said that, there are plenty of flat bits as well.

If you base yourself in Zurich or Geneva these are both great cities with lakes and nearby castles if you're into that.

Also, Swiss railways are excellent and you can easily get to different cities for a day out without having to rent a car if you don't want to do that.

This would be more a place to visit in June rather than in a couple of weeks time.

Either but probably best from mid May. We went to Lake Maggiore end May and it was showery but warm enough to swim outside. . likewise we have been to Lake Lugano mid/end May and it be pleasantly warm and sunny.

Northern Spain would suit. Bilbao is a great post industrial city with amazing art galleries and foodie culture. Choice of flights from the North.

Mid-June - Salzburg, with day trips to the lakes and mountains. You don't need to walk up the mountains but instead ride up and down in the cable cars, enjoy the views at the top and have a drink or meal on the sunny terrace of a mountain restaurant.

How about a river cruise? Definitely good for watching the world go by! End April on the Danube would be a good bet.

Itsanothermanicmonday · 10/04/2024 17:54

Thanks all. We haven’t done a cruise before and not sure if we would love it or hate it.

Budget for flights from the northern airport and accommodation 1-2K (obv food and drinks on top). Is the cost of living eating out etc not really high in Switzerland and Scandinavian countries?

Malaga would be lovely at the end of April. Very walkable; excellent food

Havanananana · 10/04/2024 18:35

Eating out in Switzerland and Scandinavia is expensive. Austria is a bit less expesive, but still more than the UK (except perhaps for anyone used to London prices). Italy, Portugal and Spain cost less.

There are Ryanair flights from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Krakow in Poland, which is very affordable and has plenty to see for a few days in June.

Thanks @Havanananana its all a bit of a nightmare synchronising both our busy calendars, organising kennels and scrapping about with very few flights that all coincide.

Now we are free hardly any flights available up north and don’t want to waste hours travelling further south.

@MissAmbrosia have you stayed here, eaten here or are you the owners?

Where do you fly from and to etc?

We've stayed there several times. Only eaten breakfast in the hotel, though plenty of cocktails by the pool. We drove once, but otherwise flew to Milan Malpensa. There is a shuttle bus to Stresa which takes about 45 mins. Lots of nice restaurants in the town. Boat trips to the islands and up the Lake. Gorgeous place.
