Is Crete warm in May!?

Planning our first family holiday in a while and looking at aparthotels in Crete the week before half term so around 20th May for a week. Any advice on best beaches / resorts and whether the outdoor unheated pool and the sea are likely to be warm enough for little children to go in!? All feedback welcome thank you

We went to Crete May half term two years ago and the weather was fantastic - 28-30c! We would definitely go again that time of year and we were in the sea and the pool. We stayed in Chania in a small, simple aparthotel rather than a resort however.

We went around 17th May a few years ago, the unheated pools were too cold to be in for long (as adults), we had a swim up room and our pool was only used a bit. The main heated pool was fine, and the sea was warm enough to cool down in, but not really for extended periods.

We went last year for May half term and the weather was awful (although I think it was awful for most of Greece and Spain that week). The pool was far too cold and we didn't attempt going in the sea because of the wind. We went to Greece in May half term in 2022 and it was fantastic weather and spent the whole holiday in the pool.

I would rather go in the middle of June but we are limited to school holidays.

The sea temperature is about 20 degrees in May in Crete it would seem. We were just in Malta (similar latitude) and people (locals not just Brits) were in the sea in Gozo over the Easter weekend, but it was a bit chilly for me, sitting around 17 degrees. Outdoor pools would also have been cold, though I didn't book anywhere with a pool. Last year we were in Lisbon in May half term and we found the swimming pools were cool in May, husband and I could endure better than the kids could, the kids got shivery fairly quickly.

It can be bit and miss. We went 2 years ago like a previous poster and it was hot but last year wasn't so great it seems.
