I’m looking for some help, we want to take our 7&10 year olds away for their first holiday abroad. We are not beach people so want things to do.
so far the kids have come up with Florida (universal) but they are not fans of rides and New York but I’m not sure if that would be to crazy for the 7yr.
We only have 1 week in June so any suggestions would be welcome

I wouldn't go to Florida for a week, that's a long flight for a short amount of time, you really need to go for 2-3 weeks to allow for the jet lag and the cost. Also your children are a bit young for Universal, you'd be better looking at a 14 day Disney pass.

For a week in June how about one week all inclusive in a nice hotel in Spain/Balearics/Canary Islands. Pick a hotel by the beach with several pools and a good kids club with lots of activities? You can also go on excursions to entertain the kids further.

I would be absolutely furious if I'd said I wanted to see the Statue of Liberty and I was presented with Iceland as an alternative lol

Yes NY is hot and humid but it also has American air conditioning... i needed to get outside to warm up.

I agree though that I'd do just one place for a week.

If you're active and don't sit down much, that's perfect - NY is a wonderful walking city. I would put classic NY films like Ghostbusters on heavy rotation in the run up, and then would do Central Park, the Library, the Guggenheim, boat trip to the Statue of Liberty, Empire State, a Broadway show, a bagel with lox, all the classics. So jealous! Have an absolutely amazing time.

I think home alone also has had a big part to play in the New York idea 😂.
Def not looking to do both it was either or, I’m voting New York

Egypt to see the pyramids?
Italy to see the amazing sights?

New York for sure! You could do in style for a week. I’ve been a lot and apart from the usual NYC stuff you can look at these ideas: A have beach day at Coney Island, take the Amtrak to Washington for the day, go to a baseball game, rent bikes in Central Park, take a night time helicopter flight, go on the big sailboat around the harbour, tea at The Plaza (Home Alone hotel), Bronx zoo or the Roosevelt Island sky tram.

Royal Caribbean do 7 night sailings from New York which visit Orlando (so you could do one day at Harry Potter) Nassau in Bahamas for Atlantis or swimming with the water pigs and a day at their private island which has a massive water park or you can just chill on the beach. Loads of fun activities for kids on the ship and a chance to make friends in the kids clubs.
You’d need to stretch your duration though so that you could have at least a couple of nights in New York before sailing to make it worth your while. In NY they will let you into the Plaza lobby for free, also you can see the Friends apartment block, the Ghostbuster’s fire house, apartment from Elf, floor piano from Big, lots of Marvel locations etc etc. Plus fantastic toy shops, broadway shows, ferry to Liberty and Ellis Island, high line, vessel.
My dc would consider it a trip of a lifetime!

Do you have any suggestions as to where is good to stay with the kids?

Florida is not to everyone's taste. I wouldn't go unless absolutely sure everyone would like it.

Lordofmyflies · 05/04/2024 17:41

If you have to travel in June and you only have one week and your youngest is 7, I'd be keeping it short haul and not too hot or muggy.
I"d be looking at Iceland for the geysers, waterfalls, horse riding, glaciers and whale spotting.
Or perhaps Italy, maybe Rome for the Colosseum and History, then train up to Venice for the Canals?

LIZS · 05/04/2024 17:44

Boston/New England might work, Cape Cod for beaches and whale watching, New Hampshire for mountains, Boston for history(take in Plimouth for the settlers village and do the Freedom trail).

For one week I'd choose Europe, what is your budget? The USA is very expensive. My suggestion is to keep it simple for a first overseas tip and head to Sicily, flying to Catania you can visit Etna, stopping in Taormina with its cable car to the beach and Greek theatre. Then head south to Syracuse where there's more historical sites to explore. You might not be beach people but booking the last 2 nights at a hotel near the beach with a pool might be a chill out time before heading home
