Where is like the Caribbean but unspoilt?

Have travelled the Caribbean extensively and whilst there are some gorgeous areas and islands that are unspoilt without lots of chain hotels, much of it seems overpopulated when you’re looking for a natural tropical paradise.

Where is like the Caribbean but is not the Caribbean? Mauritius looks over developed

Thailand has a ton of tiny islands that have only a handful of low key hotels and restaurants. Trouble is of course that whenever I find one, in a few years, so will other people, and it quickly gets too developed for my taste..

BVIs. Perfection.

The Cook Islands. The most beautiful place I've ever been. It's a horribly long way though.

I’ve been looking at them recently as a friend was on Rarotonga. Absolutely beautiful!
Where did you go?

Littlefish · 30/03/2024 19:49

@magicstar1

We went to Raratonga and then on to a smaller island called Aitutaki. It was absolutely breathtaking.

This was 20 years ago so it was very undeveloped. I'm sure it's a bit more developed now, but absolutely worth visiting.

How about off the east coast of the Malaysian peninsula? Perhentian Islands were a bit too difficult for me to get to with the dates I had, but a bit more forward planning would make them doable.

I think there’s nowhere quite like the Caribbean. BequIa or BVIs. Some islands in the BVIs are very quiet. Go on a yacht. Best way to see unspoilt Caribbean.

Northern Zanzibar was gorgeous and unspoilt when I was there, but that was a good few (ahem) years ago, maybe check it out

Pastlast · 30/03/2024 22:49

Cook Islands! If you are ever over that side of the world.

CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 30/03/2024 22:53

Dominica (not Dominican Republic) is very unspoilt and not at all touristy.

A family friend is working on the Turks & Caicos island, recently had a lovely stay there. But accommodation & eating out is very expensive, even supermarket shopping. Beautiful empty beaches though.

Cismyfatarse · 30/03/2024 23:09

We are going to near Santa Marta in Colombia, on the Caribbean coast. Loads to see and do with fascinating wildlife. Cartagena is further round the coast and much more developed. Really, really cheap and so beautiful. Plus an extraordinary culture.

Edited

This is the issue with a lot of the less travelled islands. They're less travelled because they are so expensive! St Barts etc. I'd love to go but no.

T&C is fairly mainstream, lots of hotels. The best places are small with few hotels. It will always cost money to get to out of the way places.

bloolagoon · 31/03/2024 10:19

The Belizian cayes?
Malaysia - Tioman, Perhentian, Redang islands.
Thailand
Australia- the Whitsundays
Technically the Caribbean but- Honduran Bay Islands, Nicaraguan Corn Islands, Bocas del Toro in Panama and the Costa Rican Coast.
