USA for DH's 60th

DH is going to be in the US on business from mid June to mid July and his birthday is 17 July. I can't join him until school has finished (5 July where we live) and we've kind of decided that if I go out around 13 July we could go somewhere together for his birthday and then fly back together. No DC - I work in a school. His itinerary isn't finalised yet but he is usually around North Carolina, New York state and other areas around the eastern side of the US. We need to stay that side of the country as even JFK is a 14 hour flight for us.

Any ideas about where we could go for 5-7 days would be much appreciated. I described it as 'the kind of place they send MAFS couples on their honeymoons', in case you know anywhere that meets that description 😂 I envisage a lakeside lodge but on a resort with a bar, restaurants, gym etc. - that kind of idea.

Carolina and further south will be humid and hot, it depends how you are with this weather.

I personally would try to go north, Maine, Massachussets, Boston, Cape Cod.

There are some mountain lodge hotels in Virgina, including the one where they filmed Dirty Dancing as we discovered when we looked into going to that area once.

I’ve always fancied visiting Hilton Head Island off South Carolina or the Outer Banks off North Carolina.

I love the Outer Banks of NC and in the summer they're stunning. I've never been to SC, but there are some lovely resorts along the coast. Yes, it will be hot and humid, but if you're planning a relaxing week by the pool, on the beach, pottering around, you'll be fine.

I’d go inland from NY. Catskills or Hudson Valley or Long Island. Definitely no further south!

HundredMilesAnHour · 24/03/2024 13:03

I'd go to the Hudson Valley in upstate NY. It's a beautiful area and very much a foodie / romantic weekend away destination.

You could stay here if you want all mod-cons and everything done for you:

Mohonk Mountain House | Hudson Valley New York Resort & Spa

Founded by the Smiley Family in 1869, our Victorian Castle Resort is nestled in the Hudson Valley surrounded by 40,000 acres of forest and wildlife.

Or stay here in the Catskills if you have the budget (I've always wanted to stay here but can't afford it)

Hilton Head is gorgeous - I once had a business meeting there and was gutted to literally fly in and out

Palmetto Bluff would fit the bill in SC but tbh it’s not really in the geographical area you mentioned as it’s a day’s drive south of NC. I love coastal Carolinas but many places mentioned upthread are really family holiday destinations in the season and July is prime school hols in US.

I’ve always wanted to stay in the Sagamore Resort in upstate NY. Think I saw it on an episode of Billions!
