Out if town, but Schloss Neuschwanstein and the Tegelberg summer luge.

A trip up the Zugspitze at Garmisch is absolutely amazing in good weather (a whole day trip though).

You can take your own food to beer gardens. My favourite is the Augustiner, up past the main station. Take a picnic or a pizza, or try the grilled mackerel when you get there.

The Hofbrauhaus is pretty amazing. The full-on Bavarian oompah experience when in full swing. For somewhere touristy (but also beloved of locals) the food's not bad and it really is worth visiting.

I'd heartily recommend my old watering hole the Augustiner Keller in Haidhausen, a short tram ride from the centre.

Lovely city. I adored living there.

What time of year will you be there? The lakes in and around Munich are lovely. Starnberger See is reachable by train for example, otherwise there are heaps of smaller lakes to swim in. The closer you get to the alps the more spectacular they get.

watching people surf in the English gardens should be fun for a teen

I’m taking DS in October. We’re going to Therme Erding, the Deutsches Museum and the aeroplane museum.

Forgottenmyphone · 21/03/2024 07:03

There are lots of science shows and hands-on labs at the Deutsches Museum. My DS particularly enjoys the astronomy gallery, the model railway and watching the robot demonstrations www.deutsches-museum.de/en/museum-island/exhibitions/robotics
You could also watch the surfing www.munich.travel/en/pois/sports-leisure/eisbachwelle
Olympic Stadium roof climb www.olympiapark.de/en/tours-sightseeing/guided-tours/roof-climb
For food, I’d recommend Nuernberger Bratwurst Gloeckl am Dom and if he likes cars, Motorworld Inn.

People sunbathe nude in the English Garden so it might a bit more fun for him than you'd like.

The Olympic Park is opposite the BMW museum so make sure you allow time for both.

Four days probably isn't long enough to do this as it's a 7am-7pm day trip but I can highly recommend.

We also visited Dachau which isn't difficult to travel to from the centre. We went mostly because DS was doing History GCSE but of course it may not be something you want to do whilst on holiday.

Watching this thread! Also going to Munich in Easter with my DS! Ideally I don't want to spend loads of time on trains to places. Where are the beat places to eat?

reluctantbrit · 23/03/2024 11:47

Depending how mature he is, the Dachau concentration camp is not far away
