Hello,

We're planning a trip in April with DS13 and DS9.

Just wondering if there's any must-dos whilst we're out there.

First visit so not sure and can't find much on the internet about activities suitable for the kids.

Thank you in advance Smile

I recommend just jumping on any tram if you want a tram ride. Tourists queue for two hours to ride the 'famous' tram (forget which number it is) and there's no need.

If you want to ride up in the steampunk elevator, it's way cheaper to use a a 24hr metro ticket for it than buy an individual ticket. Go early to avoid queues.

Definitely do a day trip to Sintra. It's insane. A town full of castles. We went up to one in one of the old tin can 'vintage' cars and back down in a tuktuk. Not too expensive. You can haggle a bit. Imo Quinta is the best - the gardens are amazing with the inverted tower (buried in the earth, you climb down the tower and reach some caves that lead to another tiny tower back up or to a water fall.) There is also a massive labyrinth of caves in the gardens - a small stone castle to play in, wild but friendly cats.

There's a couple of excellent Segway ride operators, also the new(ish) and highly rated Quake Room. I love the Oceanarium where you can stroke giants rays and the zoo is one of the best for animal welfare.

Second PP re going to Sintra with the proviso that it's always heaving with people (apart from 3rd Feb on odd numbered years. At 4am. In the rain). Lisbon is very walkable, friendly, safe and interesting - whatever you do you'll love it!

Thank you@AmaryllisChorus @Eyesopenwideawake

Will definitely do Sintra and the oceanarium.

Its really worth a visit!

Belem (tower, monastery, and monument to the navigators )

If you want the best gloves go here http://www.luvariaulisses.com/

Agree about Sintra.

Estoril casino inspired Casino Royale.

Train is very cheap, get a navigate card which is their Oyster.

Come back and let us know what you thought of Lisbon OP 😀

Newname2308 · 22/03/2024 18:42

This is brilliant, I’m going to Lisbon later this year so will be noting all of these suggestions 😁 Thanks!

Jittaaa · 19/04/2024 13:45

Hello,

Thank you for all for your suggestions.

We had a wonderful week in Lisbon.

Did soo much, it's fairly small city so can pack a lot it.

Highlights included a Hippotrip tour which the kids loved.

Stayed in Baixa which was ideal for us.

Managed to go to the Timeout Market, Alfama, Sintra and the oceanarium...probably missing a few things

Thought Pink Street would be more of a thing but it's literally just one street with a few umbrellas but we still got some nice pics.

Thank you again, definitely worth visiting!

Glad that you had a great time @Jittaaa. Now feeling that DH and need to go back to Lisbon 😀

Decorhate · 20/04/2024 07:10

Sounds lovely me you had a great time! How crowded was Sintra? I’m going next month…

Nonewclothes2024 · 20/04/2024 07:51

Cascais is a lovely town , just a short train ride away.

Nonewclothes2024 · 20/04/2024 07:53

Sorry , just seen you've already been 🙄

Jittaaa · 20/04/2024 10:15

@Decorhate

Sintra wasn't too crowded. We got there for about midday and we didn't have to queue up for anything except the toilets.

There were people about but nothing that distracted us from the experience.

We did Quinta de Regaleira and just the main town- spent about 4/5 hours in total.

Just fine exactly that. Brilliant.

do a “ free “ walking tour as soon as you can.

get a Lisboa card an use it judiciously daughter calculated we got 80€ or more value out of the 3 day card.

time out very crowded Sat evening - bad time to choose. Food excellent though.

other crowd points even last week - Jerónimos monastery - 15 mins queue at opening. Awful after we came out - didn’t bother with the church as that was bad too - also make sure you’re in the right queue🤣

book Peña palace first thing. Do moorish castle on the way down ( valley if the lakes exit from the lovely gardens - don’t miss the chalet !).

oh and the famous elevator - there is a way to get to the same view from above - we went on the walking tour - don’t waste time queueing.

best “ we wouldn’t have bothered but for the card “ was the national pantheon just for the viewing platform at the dome height - virtually empty - loved it.
