Road trip to Granada Spain

Has anyone done this from the North West to Granada in Spain?

I'm currently planning the route and am trying to figure out the timings of the ferry and where to stay on the way.

We have to arrive by 3pm on a Friday and will be leaving at 12pm on the Monday.

TIA

How long are you visiting for, it is unclear from your post. Is it three days or a just over a week?

StrawberryFizz27 · 10/03/2024 20:11

We will be at the accommodation for 3 days, and I'm thinking of giving us 2 days either side for travel.

Travelling from the north west of England or north west of Spain?

Assume you don’t like flying?

you’d spend far more time travelling than you would actually there. I’d only drive if I was going on a longish holiday where having my own car was advantageous.
i’ve driven from the nw to Barcelona and that was pretty epic- must have been well over 24 hours. I’ve never do that now without at least 2 overnight stops.

Op's first sentence - Has anyone done this from the North West to Granada in Spain?
From the north west of England it's a thousand miles plus ferry from Dover-Calais, or the overnight ferry to Sandander is still 500 miles on the Spanish leg.

I'd love to do this but not for 3 nights there. I'd want the travel to be part of the holiday so you need at least 3 weeks.

I would totally rethink this whole idea as you will spend far more days driving to and from there than in Granada itself. It’s going to be very expensive in terms of accommodation both ways and refilling the car. Flights will cost far less.

Quizine · 10/03/2024 20:42

I'd go as a foot passenger and take the train (with a change or two) from the ferryport (Bilbao or Santander maybe?) to Madrid, then change to the Granada/Seville line. Trains are great in Spain especially the AVE high speed, and are not anything as expensive as a similar train journey in UK.

Driving that distance down and back is madness IMV, but I know many do it and enjoy the driving, not me though!

Clearinguptheclutter · 10/03/2024 20:55

A quick google suggests it’s 19 hours from Calais to Granada: that’s before any stops!

I really don’t think this is feasible in two days unless there’s two of you and you regularly switch drivers and just power on. Crackers imo! Less driving if you get a ferry to north Spain but the ferry alone is more than 20h so would take much longer

I'd either fly to Malaga and it's a short journey to Granada from there, or go for at least a week. Anything else is bordering on daft surely.
