Has anyone ever done one of those £99 Wowcher or similar mystery holidays?

Just musing as I got an email through, now DS is off to uni soon DH and I have a lot more flexibility over holidays and it might be a random, fun experience. Or are they a big old con ? Has anyone done one ?

I'm reading the FB complaints group, so it's basically a con to get you to pay more for something decent.

@ZzzzCravingMum I've joined the Extreme Day trips scotland hoping for some inspiration.

As others have said they normally end up costing a lot more than £99 if you want a decent hotel/flights.

There's an app called LuckyTrip that I really like. You put your dates in and it randomly finds you flights and accommodation for whatever you set as your budget. If you don't like it you can press a button and it generates another option. I've used it for inspiration a couple of times!

There was something about them on Watchdog the other day.

I think it ended up costing a lot more money

Garlicking- friend of mine has done the Sun holidays for years but she said that this year the price has doubled and it would have cost her less to book direct .

MabelMaybe · 06/03/2024 12:16

The Sun holidays have reduced the range of sites and dates over the years so it's much harder now to get breaks during school holidays. They're certainly not what they were (family members have gone over several years)

Check out holiday pirates website, they can have some cracking deals if you can be flexible with dates.

We did this a few years ago as a mother/daughter trip. We got Berlin, the flight times were pants so ended up having to pay to upgrade flights, the hotel miles out so we had to pay to upgrade hotel...My dad then decided he's like to come (no issues with this btw)...he booked as a DIY and his came out £10 cheaper than our deal. We did have a really nice time when we got there though.

I recently joined a group called extreme day trips on FB, they have a Scottish sub group.....they have some people post good flight deals. We're off to Berlin (again) as a Day trip in May, friend of mine doing a day trip to Copenhagen. You can get some fairly decent deals if you are flexible with times, these trips are both well under the £99.

I've joined this recently, is it easy to navigate? I'm struggling a bit

It used to be good but it's got a bit "admin" lately n they've been taken a lot of stuff off because they mention accommodation or telling people to use the search bar a lot.

The off shoot is one called "a few days away" that's more helpful if your airports don't really have the flight times for extreme day trips.

Best search tools are Google flights or sky scanner, google flights you can search "anywhere". If your leaving from Edinburgh the most affordable flights are usually Dublin, Copenhagen, Brussels or Berlin so far this year.

My friend is on one now in Can Picafort Majorca.. the room is basic ( sells for €35 per night) but she says beds are comfy.. balcony is great.. the pool is lovely and everything is clean.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 20/04/2024 13:47

Saying that.. I'm going to the Canaries next week. Flight out was £24.99 return was £29.99.
Accommodation in a bungalow with kitchen and living room and telly and free wifi..with 2 pools on sea front for two was €168 for five nights .( We have been before)
I'm sure l could set up a business finding cheap holidays..

Well done sounds like you have done some great solo travel research! If you don’t mind would you pm me the bungalow details if you feel comfortable sharing.

hope your not anywhere near the massive protests though, that would be a massive downer.

have a great time! @PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance

Thank you! have seen someone has posted a Palma trip and it looks brilliant
My only worry is missing flights or cancellations.

Any tips to share on finding the best deals? And yes to your business idea! You could market yourself as an ' elevated travel experience curator' or some such.

Helenloveslee4eva · 24/04/2024 17:56

Not wowcher but we did a mystery break and ended up in Berlin !

was great.

only issue especially post Covid - you cannot book anything in advance so for instance we didn’t get in the reichstag. Not that bothered but recently went to Lisbon and would be sad to miss the pena palace in sintra that we had to book early , and we’d have missed the capelka di scrivelli (sp) in Padua

We had a few days in Palma last year before a cruise and had a brilliant time, I would definitely go back if I could get dates and prices to align. We stayed at a budget hotel called Hotel Linda at half board and it was excellent, you can get the bus from the airport and your 5 minute walk from the beach. You can also get the bus to central Palma.
