Venice Hotels recommendation

We are on a cruise packages that has a two night Venice stay.

We are currently booked in Mestre but I'd quite like to stay on the island?

Can anyone advise decent mid price hotel preferably with breakfast on the island or is mestre better?

Going August - been before on a cruise so as day visited- before cruise ships were banned- so aware crowds etc

Would like to experience the island at night

Also some recommendations for food would be lovely.

Thanks

We stayed in this hotel - Hotel Bonvecchiati - and really loved it. The rooms are traditional looking but we prefer that to modern hotels. The location was excellent and the breakfast on the terrace was great.

We normally stay at Hotel Vecellio. It's in a quiet location in Cannaregio. If you get a lagoon view room it looks out towards Cimitero di San Michele.

We stayed here last month. You can see it from Piazalle Roma if you’re using the airport bus or transport to the island. Decent breakfast and 5 minutes walk to the water bus. I’d stay again.

one thing to keep in mind is that there are new tourist charges for people coming in for the day and I understand that includes people from Mestre. If you’re on the island you don’t get charged as far as I am aware. Didn’t read properly as we were there a month ago and I don’t think it starts until April.

It's not the end staying in Mestre. For starters you get the journey out to Venice everyday which is magical.

Also Venice is not really a late night place (unlike everywhere else in Italy) - all of the staff in restuarants and bars need to get home, usually to Mestre, so you don't really have that culture of people only going out to eat from 9pm onwards.
