Recommend me a cheap getaway!

I want to go somewhere for two or three weeks, by myself. Will have to work while I'm there (on laptop) so want somewhere relatively peaceful, where I'm safe being a woman alone, preferably with some interesting or beautiful things to look at and do. I need to keep it super cheap - happy to stay in a hostel as long as I have space to work, cook my own food etc.

Any suggestions, please?

Madeira is very reasonable, has enough to see and do for a couple of weeks and is relatively easy to get around by public transport.
