Is it better to go on one 5* holiday or two 4* ones?

I would prefer to go away for 3 weeks in total over two trips, staying in a mixture of 3 and 4* hotels.

DH would prefer to go abroad once a year and stay only at 5* hotels for 2 weeks.

What do you think?

Two holidays for me.

TiredArse · 02/03/2024 18:18

I’d go for two. But I’m not that bothered about a fancy hotel as I like to be out and about.

MississippiAF · 02/03/2024 18:18

It’s totally personal but I’d go for one 5*

I like the luxury.

WhateverMate · 02/03/2024 18:19

Two 4* would be my preference as sometimes there's very little difference, so it depends on where you go.

Two holidays. Stars mean nothing with regards to luxury. Boutique hotel without a spa can be better than a massive mass market 5 star. But I assume he means genuine high end hotels.

2 holidays although 3 star can be a bit hit and miss. I'd only pick hotels of 3 or 4 stars with 4 plus on tripadvisor.

We always do one week 5*, the other abroad week usually self catering of some sort.

Eg this year for us 1 week in IKOS, then a separate 2 week annual leave trip, the first week is in a static caravan on Jurassic Coast followed by a week on Lake Garda in a self catered airbnb.

We tend to avoid hotels at the moment as we have a 2 year old unless it's IKOS!

I suppose if that's not an option then 2 3/4* trips away

Id go away for six weeks, three star, because i spend little tome in the hotel and rather explore the area just using the room as a sleeping base

SwedishEdith · 02/03/2024 18:23

2 trips but I've got fairly relaxed standards about where I stay and do self-catering rather than hotels.

QueSyrahSyrah · 02/03/2024 18:28

I'd go for two holidays every time, and tell your DH not to get hung up on star ratings.

I'm lucky enough to visit and/or stay in a lot of good hotels through my work and have encountered many, many 4 star and some exceptional 3 star that have been better than some 5 star.

We're staying in a 5 star right now in fact and don't get me wrong it's good; but it's no better than some properties I know in the same area that are rated 4*.

pinkmoon3 · 02/03/2024 18:57

We do 2 4* abroad a year with our toddler. We usually do 10 days in June then a week in September. The places we have stayed have everything we need and more so I definitely wouldn't compromise on one of these for the sake of an extra star.

I go on holiday 2-4 times a year.
Always 5* always adult only holidays.

HeddaGarbled · 02/03/2024 20:22

Both valid opinions - take it in turns.
